Binge drinking planning
In this plan, I will be discussing about the three proposals that I visually thought through and
created. I think that they will be the best approach in assisting the STOP.CO.UK charity to reach its
goals, which is to inform young people of the dangers of excessive consumption of alcohol and binge
drinking.
What Is Binge Drinking?
Binge drinking used to mean drinking heavily over several days. Now, however, the term refers to
the heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time
Proposal 1
How does drinking excessive amounts of alcohol/ binge drinking affect you health?
This proposal will be in an investigative format. This is because I will be interviewing several different
health consultants e.g. Alcohol nurse specialists, Dentists, Health and Social teachers, and even the
police. This is because I want to gather information from accurate sources. And this will be able to
help me with producing an effect full product at the end.
Alcohol plays a dangerous role in young peoples lives. During the teenage age from age 16 18
young people like to experiment and yet this is a delicate stage of developing as the body system
rapidly changes, which therefore puts the health at an even higher risk of alcohol damage. The
majority of young people are oblivious about how alcohol could negatively affect their health. I
personally think that this is because they are not educated enough about the threats of over
consuming alcohol. Alcohol kills 22,000 people each year in Britain. Young people need to know this
because alcohol is to blame; it is the reason why every year a number of young people have health
problems and most times long term health risks, which are made without any acknowledgement.
And this is because young people arent aware of how serious alcohol really is. Perhaps some of
them know but dont really carer because they drink heavily with the intention of getting drunk,
which is every time they drink, which is dangerous for their teenage bodies as they arent fully
developed yet. However it is never too late. So therefore with this proposal, a change can still be
made . Binge drinking affects the health in so many ways, which include:
The teenage body and brain
Teeth
The liver
Weight again
Teenage body and brain
The body and brain of teens is still developing so drinking alcohol before the age of 21 can cause
irreversible brain damage, alcohol could become a serious issue in the future if teenage binge
drinker isnt care full, first and fore most alcohol is very addictive and if taken excessively, it can
Shamim nalule
damage the most delicate organs of the body which is the brainand the skin. Alcohol can easily
wrinkle the skin and makes it young adults look older than they actually are. Above all, when alcohol
affects the brain it causes things such as: difficulty walking, blurred, vision, slurred speech etc. Binge
drinker often experience blackouts, this is because they drink way too much and too quickly, which
causes their blood alcohol levels to rise very quickly and college students are at risk particularly for
facing blackouts, as a high number of college students are involved in binge drinking.

Teeth
I researched an Aussie dentist (DR Christopher Ho) who talks about the harm alcohol brings on the
teeth as people especial;;y teenagers who binge drink neglect this import fact,
Alcohol contains acids which eat away at teeth and most teenagers are UN aware of this effect,
alcohol dehydrates and when youre dehydrated you dont have a lot of saliva in your mouth. In this
saliva, there is anti agents which kill acid, but when people are dehydrated these agents disappears,
and so it is more decay and erosion and it is even worse if the person is a binge drinker. Teenagers
need to know this important fact because I believe that they all care about their appearances
especially when it comes to their teeth, as nobody wants to have decayed looking teeth. When you
consume a big amount alcohol at same time, you are bound to feel sick, as most times the digestive
isnt able to digest is. So therefore this may lead to you to actually throw the rest back up (vomit)
and if this happens, you will have problems with acid reflux; you will have teeth being slowly wear
away because of the acid coming out of your mouth.
The liver
As I was research, I came
across this website, which
provides information about
other causes of brain
damage. It was interesting
but however irrelevant to
my work.
Shamim nalule
A large amount of heavy drinkers develop serious alcohol liver disease. And this arises from the
excessive consumption of alcohol, this is a very serious condition that over 6,000 people in the UK
suffer from and teenage binge drinker should take caution when it comes to binge drinking.

Weight again
Alcohol contains a massive amount of sugar. And when you consume more calories than your body
needs, you will gain weight. It is debatable whether teenage binge drinkers know this or not. The
body needs a specific number of calories to maintain your weight. And this need is based on your
height, weight, and age and activity level. I personally suggest that informing teenagers about how
much weight they will be caused to gain due to excessive drinking will be a n important concept and
many teenagers in the UK are self conscious about their appearance and weight gaining is one of
many problems they face as they grow. They should know and process that alcohol can lead to
weight again, from all the calories it provides and by causing you to eat more calories after
consuming the alcohol.
Proposal 2
I want this proposal to be in the form of an interview/ proposal
How binge drinking can affect your future
More and more teenagers are drinking alcohol irresponsibly and they are forgetting about the
consequences they will be facing in the near future. Alcohol affects teenagers in so many ways such
as
Job loss when addicted to alcohol, some people go into their place of work drunk or smell
of alcohol or perhaps have a hung over, and go in to work late, now no employer would
want a drunken person to work for as they will be a bad representation of their company
and this will lead to being fired or worse to never be employed in that work of field again if
one doesnt take responsibility of how to live a soba live style. Research has shown that a
high rate of unemployment has been caused by the higher rate of alcohol-related harm. In a
summary analysis of European employment and health information from 1970 to 2007,
stickler et al, in 2009, a 3% increase in un employment was linked with a 28% rise in the
number of people dying from alcohol miss usage as well as a 4.45% in suicide attempts
among individuals below the age of 65 so therefore this means that it could be people from
age 16 and over.
Shamim nalule

Drop out of college- a lot of teenager battle with alcohol addictions, and the
majority of them battle them in secrecy, they dont want anyone to know as perhaps
they feel embarrassed and they tried to speak out and ask for help but they might
feel judged. It has come to my attention is that a lot of teenagers are seeking for
help but they arent getting it. Perhaps they are seeking help in the wrong places.
The battle of drinking alcohol and binge drinking causes a lot of stress, which leads
them to quit school. And at the end the day, this affects their future, which means
they might not ever get qualifications.Staggering statistics show that 33% of college
students will drop out in their first year. What is more disturbing than that is that
almost half of those students will drop out due to a drinking or drug problem 15% of
students drop out of college because of drinking and partying too much.
Become an alcohol there is many symptoms and signs related to Drinking
problems, and alcohol is thought about being a progressive disease, signifying that
the symptoms related and effects of drinking become more and serious over time.
Teenagers can be easily affected by alcohol as their immune system is much weaker
than the fully grown adults therefore those who drink alcohol may begin to show
early signs of a problem then continues showing symptoms of alcohol usage, and if
drinking progresses, they may later show symptoms of alcoholism or alcohol
dependence.
As I was researching, i came
across this information
about alcoholics earning
the least amount of money
at a job although this data
is very informative and
gives me an insight on how
consuming alcohol and
binge drinking could affect
you financially, it is
however irrelevant.
Shamim nalule
Commit crimes in most cases, people that commit crime are under the influence of
alcohol 76% of all rape defendants had been drinking at the time of the offence.
318,000 people of the full adult population said that they or a family member were
assaulted by someone under the influence of alcohol in the past year. Alcohol abuse
can also affect the community for instance they could vandalise public property
things such as homes, buses, draw graffiti on the wall etc.
Proposal 3
How teenage pregnancy is caused by teenage drinking alcohol or binge drinking alcohol
Now in this proposal, I have decided to only talk about how alcohol drinking can lead to teenage
pregnancy and how it can affects teenage pregnancy as many irresponsible girls out there drink
whilst they are pregnant. Teenage drinking is very common in young girls from age 12 to 20, 20% of
alcohol usage in the UK is done by this age group. When drinking gets out of hand, inhibitions are
lowered and anything can happen and that may include unwanted pregnancy, most girls are most
vulnerable when they are drunk and whilst they are in this state, they put themselves at a higher risk
of being taken advantage of. Alcohol can lowerconsciousness enough to take part in one in a third of
teenage pregnancies in fourteen to twenty one years old and a surprising 91% of those girls werent
planning to have sex when it happened.
This is a very a serious topic and if it was brought to the teenage girls attention, most of them would
think twice before heavily drinking. No one wants to get pregnant in their teenage years because
most girls are still developing and finding who they are and unfortunately most girls get themselves
caught up in alcohol and thats when their future starts to get ruined. According to the department
of health, it has been revealed that British Teenage girls in Britain are more likely to binge drink than
anywhere else in Europe.
I strongly believe that making teenage pregnancy aware will make a huge difference on how young
girls view heavy drinking. Teenage pregnancy leads to sorts of things such as:
Getting abandoned by their parents - some teenagers get disowned by their parents because
they have fallen pregnant under age. I personally think parents should always be involved on
their teenagers lives no matter what this will however teach the teenagers to become
responsible parents in the future. Teenagers require support and guidance during this time.
Depression being under age and pregnant is a very stressing and confusing stage for these
teenagers, most of them dont know how to deal with being pregnant so therefore they still
consume alcohol, perhaps thats one way of coping with depression.

Loneliness- pregnant teenagers become isolated in so many ways. Once they are pregnant,
they have to start being responsible and act like adults. They are expected to stop the
partying life and doing things like normal teenagers do such as going out on a regular basis
and getting drunk every night. When a teenager fall pregnant, it is hard to adjust to new
circumstance as everything around them changes. And also feel alone. Many of them loose a
lot of friends and family members due to being pregnant underage. Sometimes feeling
lonely affects the mental state as these pregnant teenagers spend most of their time alone,
Shamim nalule
they have no one to relate to and sometimes they have to do everything themselves,
without help

Discrimination pregnant teenagers and discrimination go hand in hand, although 468,988
children are born to teenage mothers each year, however there is still a bid problem to
being a teenage mother. Society is not willing to accept the growing rate of teenage
pregnancy and it is negatively viewed by a lot of people and dont think it is right. These
pregnant teenagers will pay for being pregnant under age for the rest of their lives.

- At school; teens that are pregnant get stared and pointed at, and to make it worse, they
get picked by the teachers and get excluded from school for being pregnant as the
school thinks they are setting a bad example to the rest of the students.
- work place some teens complain about not being able to find work just because they
are pregnant
- At home some family member may feel ashamed of these pregnant teens and are not
willing to offer a helping hand and simply disappear from their lives.

Questionnaire results
I gathered a focus group of 12teenagers from age 16-19. I wanted to get to know them as individuals
and get to know their interests and what they do in their spare time. During this process I found out
that most of them drink excessively, more than they actually should as they are under age. However
this isnt surprising as thereare 6 billion binge drinkers in the UK. And over 5 thousand teenagers are
admitted to hospital for binge drinking. If found out that most of these teenager drink for fun, most
of them are peer pressured in to drinking, and most importantly, they dont care about the side
effects. From the questionnaire I discovered that most teenagers started consuming alcohol at the
age of 15 years old. And these were 4 teenagers out of 12. 7 teenagers out of 12 have been drunk
and 4 teenagers have drink alcohol but never been drunk and only 3 teenagers have never had a
drink of alcohol, 5 students have drunk more than once. 4 students have drunk more than 4 times, 1
person has drunk more than 5 times, 4 students have drunk more than once a month. 3 teenagers
out of 12 have ever been sick from drinking, 1 has had an injury from over drinking. And no student
has ever been in trouble with their parents for drinking. And perhaps this maybe the root of why
teenagers drink, it is because they feel free to do whatever they want with no precautions. Do your
parents know that you drink I asked the focus group and the majority said No (7 out of 12 students)
do it behind their parents backs, and the rest said that their parents know, but there is nothing they
can do about it as they also drink. However 3 students drink in secret, this has made me wonder; if
parents were more aware of the whereabouts of their kids when they go out, and what exactly they
get up to or do when they go out, would there be less teenage binge drinkers in the UK? Perhaps
parents are partially to blame as only 3 students out of 12, whose parents would worry about their
drinking habits. Also from the question results I found out those students would spend more than 5
on alcohol. 4 students would spend 10, 3 students would spend more than 15 and 1 more than
20. 6 students drink spirits, 5 drink Alco pop, 3 drink cider and 1 drinks wine. And 3 students have
gotten themselves into trouble with the police. Lastly 3 students have had liaisons with someone
they actually wouldnt like or fancy.
I discovered that 42 thousand students are introduced to binge drinking and spend a lot of
money on alcohol. Drinking games are a massive part of socializing pre drinking they
normally do this before going out. 78% of 18-34 pre drink before going out. 3 units are in a
glass of wine and from the research I made an Alcohol Nurse Specialist say anything over
the 0.7 is classified as a high risk. And more of these students drink more than 0.7 units
before they go out, and if they drive, they will be drunk driving and this will be breaking the
law, they will also have a high chance of being involved in road accidents, which will put
their lives at risk.According to CAS, fully 30 percent of students who drank in the past year
said they had driven after drinking during the past 30 days (Wechsler et al, 2000b). In the
Core survey, one-third of students (39 percent of drinkers) admitted driving while under the
influence of alcohol or other drugs within the past year (Presley et al., 1996
Shamim nalule
I had a conversation with a 19 year old boy and from the conversation we had he said that he love to
drink because it makes him feel relaxed. As you can see he said he started drinking from the age of
12 years, and he still drinks today

Feed back
after creating and developing my proposal ideas, I presented them to the focus group, I did so
because I wanted to collect to know what they thought about them and what I could improve,. I
originally wanted proposal one to be my main idea because I thought it would be more educative.
However the focus group preferred proposal2. 8 out of 12 people thought it was a unique idea and it
was different from everything else out there. They suggested that it will be a distinctive way of
approaching the binge drinking issue. Young people will find it more effect-full to know what could
happen in the future if they arent responsible enough.
I would personally want to product an idea that will reach out to the youth and make a difference so
therefore I have also decided to use the second idea as I have thought hard and discovered that
proposal 2 is more appropriate and will attract more attention and could be relatable.
