Drawing 2 - Sketchbook Journal Guidelines

Drawing in a sketchbook is similar to writing in a journal. It becomes a daily record of your thoughts and ideas achieved through a visual
format. The concept of maintaining a sketchbook is something that should become a regular habit for the visual artist. The end result is that you
will create a valuable resource of ideas that can be used as inspiration for your work.

The goals of sketchbook journaling generally differ for each person. However, for the purpose of this class your sketchbook will be used as a
means to enhance your drawing experience. The majority of assignments will be observational drawings. In addition, there will also be
imaginative pieces assigned that will challenge your ability to think creatively.

Sketchbook Guidelines:
1. You will be given paper to create the sketchbook. If you want to purchase a sketchbook it should be no smaller than 5 x 7 nor larger than
9 x 12.

2. You will be required to complete 8 drawings (for homework) in the sketchbook during this trimester. Assignments should be completed in
the designated order, do not skip around. The pieces have been developed sequentially and aligned with work that is being completed in class.

3. The drawings should be completed using the appropriate technique and medium.

4. The drawings should be completed by observing the subject that has been assigned. DO NOT DRAW FROM PHOTOGRAPHS unless
otherwise indicated.

5. You will be required to enhance your drawings with written notations. The writing may include artist quotes, your thoughts while working
on the sketch, critiques of your work, or inspirational phrases.

6. Write on the back of each drawing: the number of the assignment, the title and the amount of time you worked on the sketch.

7. Drawings are due each Thursday. However, this may be change from time to time due to unforeseen school cancellations or calendar
changes.

8. In order to receive full credit (24 points) for each drawing you must:
a. draw the correct subject e. include written notations on the front of the drawing
b. consider the composition of the subject matter f. put the assignment number, title the work & time spent on the
c. consider the placement of the image - utilize the entire paper homework on the back of the drawing
d. use the correct medium g. produce a high quality drawing
h. spend at least 45-60 minute on each drawing

Drawing 2 - Sketchbook Assignments

3-27 1. Title - pots & pans Pencil drawing of pots and/or pans in a sink or on the stove. You must have a minimum of 3 objects.
The background must be included and the entire image must be shaded.

4-3 2. Title - tools of the trade Pencil drawing of a set of tools that represent a specific profession. You must have a minimum of 3
objects. You must overlap the objects and include the background. Shade the entire image.

4-17 3. Title - crumbled paper Pencil drawing of a crumbled piece of paper sitting on a textbook. Include background details
such as the textbook cover, the table (the textbook is sitting on) and cast shadow. Shade the entire
image.

4-24 4. Title - reflection Pencil drawing an object and its reflection using a mirror. The background must be included and the
entire image must be shaded.

5-1 5. Title - building Pencil drawing of your house. The building should be drawn in perspective. The background must be
included and the entire image must be shaded.

5-8 6. Title - time sequence Draw an image of an object that shows it changing through time. In order to create this drawing you
must look at the object. An apple is a good choice for this assignment. Students choice of medium.

5-15 7. Title - sadness Create a drawing (including shading) that shows your interpretation of sadness. Students choice of
subject and medium.

5-22 8. Title - free choice Students choice of subject and medium. This should be one of your best drawings.

5-29 9. Title - free choice Students choice of subject and medium. This should be one of your best drawings.
