Information Management and Application of Patient Care Technology
The Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice Essential IV (Essential
IV) states that computer and information literacy are crucial to the future of nursing (American
Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2008, p. 17). In addition to basic computers skills
and competence in the use of patient technologies, baccalaureate prepared nurses must also show
competence in the use of information technology systems (AACN, 2008). Baccalaureate
graduates must also demonstrate an understanding of standardized terminologies, which are the
foundation of effective clinical information systems (AACN, 2008).
Exemplar
The selected assignment was to identify an issue in the workplace and propose a
technological solution. Of all the work completed this term, this assignment best incorporated
the requirements of Essential IV. During this assignment I identified a real-world workplace
issue, brainstormed a technological solution, mapped both the current and proposed workflows,
created a timeline for implementation, and applied change theory to the process.
Reflection
My work on this project reflects the standard of planning as described in the American
Nurses Associations (2010) Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice; The
informatics nurse develops a plan that prescribes strategies, alternatives, and recommendations to
attain expected outcomes (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2008, p. 70). The project
deepened my knowledge of nursing informatics and its importance to nursing practice and
quality patient care. Of particulate importance is integration of technology with workflow in an
effort to not only improve patient care but to also increase cost effectiveness and safety;

baccalaureate prepared nurses recognize that redesign of workflow and care processes should
precede implementation of care technology to facilitate nursing practice(AACN, 2008, p. 19).
This project has prepared me to act as a strong leader and advocate for the use of new patient
care technologies (AACN, 2008, p. 19) as described Essential IV and to be a valuable member
of any workflow or technological process team.
