Hot Tapping

IPSCO GmbH designs, develops and manufactures standard and custom fittings for our customers which include all major oil and gas companies,

Hot Tapping is a procedure using an under pressure drilling machine to cut a hole in an operating pipeline which allows for a new branch
connection from the original pipe. The process is done without any product leakage or interruption to flow. We manufacture a complete line of
equipment for tap sizes ranging from to NS 72 (ND 1800) with pressure ratings up to 1480psi (102 bar) and temperatures to 700F (370C) as
standard on all types of pipe. Special applications are available upon request.

Below is a more detailed description of a typical hot tap application.



Typical Hot Tap Application

The components for a typical hot tap application include a fitting
designed to contain system pressure, a valve used to control the new
connection, and a drilling machine used to make the hot tap.


The following is the basic procedure:
36 (ND 900mm) hot tap on a water main
1. Install fitting and valve on the existing pipeline.
2. Install hot tap machine.
3. Perform hot tap through the open valve. A special device retains
the coupon removed during the hot tap operation.
4. Retract cutter assembly.
5. Close hot tapping valve.
6. Remove hot tap machine.
