Reading the Word and the World Paulo

Freire & Donaldo Macedo

Have a standard and task you would like to focus on with your
child: vocabulary, synonyms, homographs, poems, narratives,
etc.
Work together with your student; walking, exploring and
reading the world outside your home. As you explore the
community, take lots of pictures of anything that attracts your
attention. Try to find things that interest you and pique your
curiosity.

Spend some time exploring and photographing. Talk with each
other about what you are seeing and experiencing.

After, look together at the pictures. Talk with your student
about what you are noticing:
o What patterns do you see?
o Which pictures intrigue you most?
o What questions do the pictures elicit?

Talk about the pictures and then choose your favorites that
match the task your student is focusing on.

Upload or print the pictures and let student create a writing
piece to support the task. Have student write a sentence(s) that
matches the pictures and meets the standard.

Have your student present to you and talk about the pictures
that were chosen and why/how it matches the standard.
