Question 2
2.1
2.1.1 A candle flame transfers heat to my hands.
2.1.2 Heat is always transferred from a warmer object to a colder object.
2.1.3 Conductors increase the amount of heat transferred between objects.
2.1.4 Insulators reduce the amount of heat transferred between objects.

Question 4

4.1 White paint will allow a certain amount of heat to penetrate, but most will be reflected.
It makes the house cool during the day and so cold in the night. Black, dark surfaces are
very hot during the day, this is not so good in warm climates.
4.2 No it is not. Convection means movement of molecules (usually circular) as in a
convection current. In convection molecules are moving whilst in solids particles vibrate.
4.3 Astronauts’ suits reflect the radiant heat from the and it can not be easily absorbed.
4.4 Aluminium is not as good a conductor as iron, hence it will be better than iron in a hot
climate.
4.5 Why does glass not get very hot?
(10)
Question 5

5.1.1 Convection
5.1.2 This is the movement of heat through a liquid. Particles are not so closely packed
together. They move freely and hot water from the bottom rises and cold water sinks.
5.2 This is the movement of heat through a solid substance. Particles vibrate and therefore
heat moves along the substance from a hotter position to a colder position.
5.3 The process is radiation. The heat from the sun is transferred through an empty space and
is reflected on the satellite dish and is able to heat up the liquid in the cup.
