UNIT 10: WWII

LP DAY 2 & 3
INTRODUCTION TO PIVOTAL DICTATORS

DAY 1:
UNIT ESSENTIAL QUESTION (EQ): What were the causes & global consequences of WWII?

DAILY EQ: Why did dictatorial governments emerge in Germany, Italy, and the USSR after
World War I?

OBJ:
WHII.10 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the worldwide impact of World
War I by
a) explaining economic causes, political causes, and major events
b) explaining the outcomes and global effect of the war and the Treaty of
Versailles;
c) citing causes and consequences of the Russian Revolution.
WHII.11 The student will demonstrate knowledge of political, economic, social, and cultural
developments during the Interwar Period by
a) citing causes and assessing the impact of worldwide depression in the 1930s;
b) examining events related to the rise, aggression, and human costs of dictatorial
regimes in the Soviet Union, Germany, Italy, and Japan, and identifying their
major leaders, i.e., Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Hirohito, and
Hideki Tojo.

HW:
-If your group did not finish sharing, it is your responsibility to complete the sections that
werent covered in class at home. Make sure that your dictator is COMPLETELY finished
before next class begins as you will be sharing the information with your War Committee

DO NOW: (posted on the board as students enter the classroom)
1. Please pick up all of the handouts up front (Packet for Webquest, and Dictators
Webquest Warm Up)

*You will have 15 minutes from the time the bell rings to complete all of the DO NOW
requirements.*

Sharing of Good Times
TTW Explain to the students todays tasks (todays classwork and webquest)
TTW have the students share the Warm Up Activity; as TS share the information,
TTW type it and project it on the board so all students can see and add to their
answers from the whole class collaboration

EXPLANTATION OF TODAYS TASK
TTW break students up into groups of 6s (two for each dictator) to compile the
students War Committee. The groups will be assigned based upon pre-assessment
scores (given previous class). While in War Committee, TTW explain to TS todays
activity (have them pick up a laptop, go to the weebly page for todays assignment
(www.http://babcockdictators.weebly.com) and open up to the homepage.)
Once on the homepage, TTW have TS open the Assignment Page, and
independently read the directions. Once finished, TTW review the instructions and
answer any clarification questions.
TTW then assign students to their breakout groups (these are the specialized dictator
groups i.e. Special Opps Groups) and explain their roles split up the packet
amongst group members, those who have the same section of the packet need to
not use the same websites to gather information, explanation of citations, and time
frame.
TTW explain that they will have until 20 minutes to gather all the information for
their assigned portion, and then will have another 20 minutes to teach/share the
information gathered with fellow Special Opps group members and take notes.

LESSON STEPS: (Dictator Breakout Groups/Special Opps Groups)
TSW research their assigned dictator and gather the necessary information for which
they are responsible.
TSW use the provided websites to complete their note taking (in the provided packet)
on their given section to share with the group
TTW monitor students work throughout this activity and stress the importance of
TEACHING their group members, not just passing their packets around to each other to
copy by the end of the sharing session, they will have all the requirements completed
for their dictator
TTW provide students, during independent research time, with a supplemental
handouts geared to their dictator to help them find the right information for each
section (rise, maintain, fall Stalin WWII involvement)
Independent time: 15 minutes
Sharing with Breakout Groups/Special Opps 35 minutes
CLOSURE:
Review of tonights HW
1o minutes before the bell rings, TTW have students stop where they are and pass
out the peer evaluation sheets. TTW review the directions and stress the
importance of honesty. When the evaluation is complete, each student will come
up to the teacher and submit the evaluation.
Once the evaluation is completed, TSW shut down their laptops and plug them
back into the cart

DAY 2:

things you learned last class about your dictator? Use your notes. We will be sharing
this information.

their assigned portion, and then will have another 20 minutes to teach/share the
information gathered with fellow Special Opps group members and take notes

LESSON STEPS: (War Committees)
TSW rejoin their original groups their War Committee and teach each member of
their group about their specific dictator TS are not allowed to pass their packets
around to allow students to copy the information, the information has to be taught.
TTW monitor student progress and remind, when necessary, to teach and not merely
read and have peers copy the information. TTW also provide assistance if information is
inaccurate
10 minutes before the bell rings, TTW have students stop where they are and pass out
the peer evaluation sheets. TTW review the directions and stress the importance of
honesty. When the evaluation is complete, each student will come up to the teacher
and submit the evaluation.
CLOSURE:
Review of tonights HW
Once the evaluation is completed, TSW complete the exit ticket (on a sheet of
paper, list one important aspect of each dictators rise, maintenance of power,
fall/involvement in WWII)
