Genetics and Medicine Research Project Annotated APA Bibliography

For an annotated bibliography, use standard APA format for the citations, then add a brief
abstract for each entry, including:
2 to 4 sentences to summarize the main idea(s) of the item, and
1 or 2 sentences to relate the material to your research topic and/or to evaluate the material.
Use http://www.bibme.org/ for free APA citation help. Make sure to switch the style selection to APA.

GENERAL FORMAT FOR A WEBSITE IN APA:

Last, F. M. (Year, Month Day). Article title. Website Title. Retrieved Month Day, Year, from URL

GENERAL FORMAT FOR AN ONLINE DATABASE JOURNAL IN APA:

Last, F. M. (Year Published). Article title. Journal Title, Volume(Issue), Page(s). Retrieved Month
Day, Year, from Database.

The sources that you use must be reliable academic sources (NOT Wikipedia or yahoo.answers or
wiki.answers); you must use at least six sources and four of them have to be database academic
sources. You will get a zero for the entire project (presentation and the paper) if you do not use the
approved sources.

Which main point of the topic does this source address?
What is gene therapy?
When was gene therapy first used
And for what reason
What type of gene therapy are currently used today
What potential does gene therapy have in the curing of diseases
The different types of gene therapy
How gene therapy techniques must be approved

Annotation (3-6 sentence summary of the source)
This source explains what gene therapy is and gives background to some information of the human
genes. The source states that although gene therapy is in the early stages of development it could have
great potential in curing incurable diseases. This website also states that the first gene therapy
treatment happened in 1990 and it was a girl with a bad immune system but through gene therapy they
were able to fix her deficiency.

Which main point of the topic does this source address?
*More in depth history of gene therapy from 1990 all the way to 2007
*Concerns with gene therapy

Annotation (3-6 sentence summary of the source)
After the first successful gene therapy treatment, French researchers conducted a trial using a different
method of gene therapy to treat 10 children with an immune system problem. However 4 of the 10
children developed leukemia and it was thought that it was caused by the gene therapy; this lead to
speculation and concerns about the safety of the procedure. There were also some deaths that were
caused by gene therapy and all of the problems lead organizations like the CDC take a closer look at
gene therapy.

Annotation (3-6 sentence summary of the source): This article connects with my project topic because it
shows a possible future with gene therapy. The article states that the future of it doesnt lie on its
procedures but in its way it delivers the treatment in the body. The article states that the way the gene
therapy is delivered (through injection) is very effective and realistic.

Annotation (3-6 sentence summary of the source)
This article shows a time line of the development of gene therapy. It would be useful information to
have because it explains why gene therapy hasnt really been heavily researched and developed. Due to
the entire set back in gene therapy it has stop further trials and our knowledge of the subject is still very
low.

This website is all dedicated to the topic of stem cell research and gene therapy. It shows both ethnic
and scientific reasons as for why gene therapy has been very controversial. Another thing this topic
provides is the importance of gene therapy and that it could be the key to curing genetic disorders and
even cancer.

Annotation (3-6 sentence summary of the source)
In this article they explained that one of he main scientific obstacles is the immunes system because the
treatment is introduced through viruses called vectors and the immune system could kill them before
the meet their target. Another obstacle is getting the virus to go where its suppose to go and this leads
to problems because it could cause the development of more diseases. The gene going to the wrong
place could cause this. I believe this is important information because they are issues that need to be
fixed and this could influence the medical field by making researchers study this more.
