HOW DID THE ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION
EFFECT THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE?

The Articles of Confederation were put into use in 1777 as a plan for the entire nation, it only had one
branch of government called Congress, in which all states were equal and they had limited powers,
giving more power to the states. Congress did have some power, they could deal with foreign nations,
make laws, declare war, borrow money, and run a postal service, although they had no power to
enforce this.
The Articles of Confederation were too weak to support the nation so a group called the Constitutional
Convention was organized to revise the articles. Many argued that revising the Articles would not be
enough. In the Great Compromise the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey plan were combined to create
our Constitution.
