Part II: Annas Illnesses

Illnesses Effect
on System (if
applicable)

Diabetes Sickle Cell
Anemia
Heart Disease Urinary Tract
Infection
Cardiovascular

rise or fall in
blood pressure,
Microangiopathy

Increase
pulse, heart
beats faster
and works
harder. Low
amount of red
blood cells

Increase heart
rate and heart
works harder;
ventricles
become stiff
and dont fill
with blood
between beats
Acute heart
failure,
decrease in
blood volume
to the kidneys,
can result in a
decline of
kidney
function which
filters and
cleans the
blood
Digestive

gastrointestinal
discomfort and
distress
Bilirubin
gallstones -
sickle cells die
in 20 days;
liver breaks
down the
bilirubin; extra
bilirubin can
become a
gallstone in the
gallbladder

(bilirubin forms
bile)

Intestinal
Ischemia-
damage
includes blood
clots,
inflammation,
blockage,
ulcers, and
dead intestinal
tissues
the digestive
system cannot
properly break
down food,
excess toxins
can be passed
to the urinary
system

Immune

The disease
causes the
immune system
to destroy insulin
producing cells
within the
pancreas. The
immune response
is lower in people
who have
diabetes so they
are more
susceptible to
getting infections
Sickle cells
block or
reduce blood
flow,
decreasing the
delivery of
oxygen as well
as germ-
fighting
immune cells
to parts of the
body
if the heart
does not pump
properly, the
structures in
the immune
system cannot
do their jobs
Increased
production of
lymphocytes
(B & T cells)
and antibodies
against the
bacteria;
Inflammatory
response (may
increase
additional UTI
and/or
damage to
urinary tract
structures.
Nervous

Neuropathy,
stress, eye
complications
Poor blood
circulation in
the brain can
cause stroke,
convulsions,
and coma
left ventricular
dysfunction
which triggers
the
sympathetic
nervous
system
N/A
Respiratory

Since their
immune system is
weaker, people
with diabetes are
more prone to
illnesses
Acute chest
syndrome
occurs when
sickle cells
become
trapped in the
chest, blocking
the flow of
blood and
oxygen to the
lungs
heart works
harder and
breathing is
increased to
bring oxygen to
all parts of the
body
N/A
Urinary

Kidney disease,
ketonacidosis
higher urinary
output than
normal
Acute heart
failure,
decrease in
blood volume
to the kidneys,
can result in a
decline of
Kidney
damage or
scarring
Kidney
infection
