Math Concept: Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear

equations.
Grade: 8
CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.7B Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients,
including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive
property and collecting like terms.
Big Ideas: Solve multi step equations

Open Question: How do you solve equations?
Expected Student Responses
By doing the work.
Guessing the answer and checking it.
I dont know.

Management
Can you take off your sock without taking off your shoes?
o You have to untie your shoes and take them off first.
To take off your socks you have to take off your shoes by doing the opposite of
what you did to put them on.
To solve an equation you must also do the opposite operation to solve for the
given variable.
In small groups students must put into words what the one step equations say.
o p and number is 8
From there they can indicate the opposite operation that must be done to both
sides of the equation to solve it.
o p and number is 8
o The opposite operation would be to subtract 3 from each side.
o They have to explain why they subtract 3 from each side.
It is a positive 3 so it must be subtracted from each side.

Debrief:
Students must write an equation and exchange it with their partner.
Their partner must translate to an equation.
Then exchange it with another group and they must solve it
Then exchange it with another group and they must tell why the work was done.

Academic Language Check:
These words must be used when writing about the equation exchange.

Summarize what we have learned:
Lesson Goal #1: Solve linear equations in one variable with rational number coefficients.
How do we solve equations and why?
Each group must write a complete sentence or sentences to explain and share it
with another group.

Formative Assessment (Exit Ticket, Ticket Out the Door, Show What You Know):
Write three words that we used for discussing equations and what the mean on a
post-it.

Lesson Goal #2: Solve linear equations in one variable with rational number coefficients.

Tiered Lesson:
Give the students two equations one a one step equations and the other a multi
step equation.
In partners they must fill out a ven-diagram comparing the two equations.

Debrief:
Go over how the equations are the same and how they are different.

Summarize what we have learned:
Give another two equations.
Write two ways they are alike and two ways they are different. (Exit ticket)
Formative Assessment:
Quiz on one step equations how to solve them, what you do to both sides and why
