Genetic engineering is a dual sided sword. Do we really want humanity to be playing god
literally taking Mother Natures ability to control our evolution, why dont we just stop thinking
about it and persuade people not to try it or use it. We can choose the genes that we wish to pass
onto our immediate future generations and bypass the genetic lottery (Hemmy Cho, 1). Hemmy
Cho is Global Program Manager at Google. Previously, she worked as a multiplatform trainer
and product manager at the BBC, specializing in TV, radio, web, gaming, and social media, so
she tells the truth about how genetic engineering can affect us. Do we really want to control what
our child will look like when they are born? We all know it is very exciting to finally see your
son or daughter, but when we have already planned what they are going to look like wouldnt
that take away some of the excitement and joyfulness of having a child. This will affect our
future sooner or later, so will we be able to change anything if something goes wrong? These are
only some of the problems associated with genetic engineering.
The correct way to look at it is that it shows that you could go either way with genetic
engineering. So why do we want genetic engineering we all know it has many pros and cons so
here are some of them. Anderson an essayist and professor emeritus of agricultural
communications at the University of Idaho, states in his article The possibilities for genetic
transformation are likely to be vast, but only for wealthy parents. Designer babies would not be
affordable for ordinary Americans or the majority of people in other countries. The existence of a
special class of persons who, from birth, were assumed to be "superior" could cause serious
social problems (Anderson Clifton E., 2). A positive is that we could use it for protecting
ourselves from harmful disease and other illnesses that we may acquire during life, so we dont
know what genetic engineering will hold for us. The moral force of the objection that genetic
engineering, especially positive eugenics or genetic enhancement, is "playing God" is that we do
not know that there are no risks. A proper humility and recognition of limited human knowledge
and fallibility is required for reliable moral behavior. A strong argument for concluding that
genetic enhancement and perhaps even genetic therapy is morally unacceptable is that it risks
great harm for many in future generations in order to provide benefits for a few in this one
(Bernard,1) . Morally how have we affected society if we have genetically engineered a babys
personality or actions and thoughts during birth, do we really need to do this, we need to have
more research backing genetic engineering up before we truly throw it out into the modern day
world.
Truly one of the best solutions recommended is have genetic engineering really looked
into by a lot of organizations and be regulated in safe manners. This could be the only way if
used for good. We never know what people may use the genetic engineering for in their
everyday lives. Those who say mankind will never manipulate the genome for military purposes
must count themselves with those who would have said that mankind would never manipulate
the atom for military purposes (Brad Sherman, 1). People say that genetic engineering is the right
way to go, but do we really know what it is like to play god and leave Mother Nature out of the
equation. Scientists say it is good to use because it could help stop diseases at birth or other bad
traits they may find later in life. Also that by genetic engineering we could have a safer world to
live in, that it is better for humanity to be safe this way. You have to look through other peoples
perspective to get both sides of the story. If the problem is not addressed we may be getting
ourselves into a problem that if not controlled could lead this engineering into bad people and
wouldnt be safe. Before this kind of scientific work gets too far ahead, parallel research is
needed in the ethics and morality of such advances. Tellingly, that desire for understanding can't
be found in any gene (Christian Science Monitor, 1). We all should agree with the Christian
Science Monitor, we need to take the time to research and test this engineering before we really
put it out there for the public to use.
We urge society to look into this topic please go in with an open mind it is the only way
anyone can see both sides. This is a very interesting topic genetic engineering is so neat but it
will and already is becoming a problem. So do we want designer babies or a safer world, society
needs to, chooses it is not up to just a few people. So make your decision and then ask yourself is
this the right way to go. Genetic engineering is very close and the longer we wait the closer we
get to an unsafe form of technology so please we ask you to look into this topic and realize what
we have to do to allow genetic engineering.
