Summer
It was a summer long ago when I met you.
How to forget that lovely face, those profound eyes,
the way you smiled at me, even though I was a total stranger.
I could almost feel that I knew you,
that we were close.
Yes, it was summer and I had never loved summer more.
I walked towards the shore, pretending I was not watching you.
That is when you came walking next to me, or so I thought.
It is summer again; this is why I remember those days,
when I didnt know you, and you didnt know me,
when I wasnt left alone, where I didnt feel desolate.
Where I could hold you close and you could hold me back.
But now, I cant even look at you in the eyes,
like a damsel would to a prince,
and tell you how I feel.
Cause youre mine no more,
because you belong to a bigger being.
Because now, you are truly part of the universe
While I stay here, in this place called earth.
I start imagining vicariously,
searching peremptorily for you once more.
Sad thing is you resulted to be elusive
And insidious
You ended up being just like me

Title: What
predictions can you
make from the
title? What are
your initial
thoughts about the
poem? What might
be the theme of the
poem?
Summer: the title makes me infer that the poem will be warm and fun.
Summer is a station that is considered to be joyful along with spring,
unlike fall and winter that tend to be portrayed as sad and gloomy.

Paraphrase:
Summarize the
poem in your own
words.
Two people meet as there are young in summer and everything seems
perfect for the time. Then the speaker talks about how much he misses her,
this is because it is summer again, but this time it is different since she it is
implied that this woman has died. This causes a tremendous pain in the
author.

Connotation:
What is the
connotative
meaning of the
poem? Find
examples of
imagery,
metaphors, similes,
etc. and elaborate
on their
connotative
meanings.
Because you belong to a bigger being /Because now, you are truly part of
the universe /While I stay here, in this place called earth this phrase
connotes for the fact that his girl has died. *Anaphora. The repetition of
because adds a sort of convincing tone for what is happening for the author
himself.

You ended up being just like me connotes for irony present in the poem.
A broader end that leaves both reader and author with a sentiment of being
more lost than at the beginning of the poem.

Attitude: What
attitude does the
poet have toward
the subject of the
poem? Find and
list examples that
illustrate the tone
and mood of the
poem.
Attitude of the author is nostalgic: Cause youre mine no more /Because
you belong to a bigger being /Because now, you are truly part of the
universe /While I stay here, in this place called earth and maybe it can
also result negative since the loss of this woman causes a lot of pain.

Mood of the poem is gloomy, even heartbreaking. Sad thing is you
resulted to be elusive /And insidious/You ended up being just like me

Shift: Is there a There are two shifts, the first one occurs as the author changes from a
shift in the
tone/attitude of the
poem? Where is
the shift? What
does the tone shift
to?
happy attitude at the beginning to a sad one when it is mentioned that
she dies. The second one occurs when the author changes to a sort of
angering attitude at the end. Ending the poem very ambiguously.
Title: Revisit the
title and explain
any new insights it
provides to the
meaning of the
poem.
The title of the poem Summer has nothing to do with a warm and happy
poem it is simply a time of the year like any other where anything can
happen. Summer means nothing rather than another station, although most
of the time winter is seen as more a sadder station.
Theme: What is
the overall theme
of the poem?
Love knows no time of year, but nor does death; and both can result very
painful. Love and death have no reasoning, nor specific timing.
