KJM 643 DESIGN OPTIMIZATION TEST-1 (75 minutes)

PART-1

1. (i) Describe a design that is optimum.
(ii) What is an important criteria in deciding which parameters to be the design variables?
(iii) Give an example of a fluid related system, and what your choice of design variable
(name one) will be.
(iv) Give one example of design constraint in the design of heat exchanger.

2. A gas container made of steel with internal pressure p of 22 N/mm
2
is designed to have the
smallest volume of sheet metal. The container is in the shape of sphere and shall have
minimum interior volume of 1.5E10 mm
3
. The container internal diameter is d. The
thickness of the container is t. The ratio of thickness to diameter shall be less than 1%, and
the minimum thickness is 5 mm. The maximum sphere diameter d is 4000 mm.
The container is not allowed to yield plastically under internal pressure. Material of the
container is steel with yield strength of 250 N/mm
2
. From pressure vessel theory, the stress
of the spherical vessel due to internal pressure is
