Reading
1. Apply appropriate strategies to understand different genres of text, including how specific
sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text relate to each other and the whole.
2. Understand how an author uses writing structure, purpose, or point of view to develop content
and style of text.
3. Determine the appropriate of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including
determining connotative, figurative meanings, and satire; and analyzing how specific word choices
shape meaning or tone.

Writing:
1. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique,
well-chosen details, and well-developed sequence and structure.
2. Produce coherent writing through development, organization, and style appropriate to the task.
3. Use the writing process to strengthen my writing and peers writings.

Listening and Speaking
1. Communicate effectively in a variety of discussions.
2. Respond thoughtfully to diverse perspectives; synthesize comments and claims to assist in the
