1. Enhance active, close, and analytical reading skills as applied to both
student and professional writing.
2. Build written fluency and help gain confidence in my ability to
generate thoughtful responses to college level reading and to produce
essays of a given length.
3. Utilize the stages of the writing process, from generating ideas and
writing drafts through revising and proofreading.
4. Practice academic library research techniques, emphasizing the use of
subscription databases.
5. Develop my skills in writing essays with clear purpose and audience,
thesis-driven organization, and solid supporting material.
6. Annotate, outline, summarize, paraphrase and quote text, cite the
source in acceptable MLA format (using parenthetical citations), and
create a Works Cited page.
7. Experience taking in-class essay exams and instruction in generating
and organizing ideas to produce an exam essay, given time constraints.
8. Incorporate the conventions of standard written English.
