Dr. AJ,
I have completed the Front-End and Heat Recovery sections of the methanol plant flowsheet
using Aspen Plus. I used redfrac (without condenser of reboiler) with metal pall ring packing as
saturation column. The column was efficient enough to produce about the entire methanol at
upstream. To adjust the make up steam I used a design spec which estimates the flow rate of
make up steam is 8448.91 kmol/hr. I checked it by calculating by hand and the result was close
the estimated one.
For the reformer I used one inlet and one outlet heat stream. As at this point we dont know the
value of heat streams, I assumed it to be zero. The cooler used after reformer was air cooled due
to high temperature of process streams. Then the I used three flash before the stream goes to
compressor.
Final temperature and pressure were 800 C and 18 bar which matched with result given in note.
The final flow rate (8458.95 kmol/hr) was higher than the given flow rate. Input heat stream of
the reformer may be responsible for this deviation.
