Scholar's challenge # 4
Choice B (Water Boy)
Mr. D give us scholar's challenge # 4. We have two choices. We have to choose one. So,
I read both problems and imagine the problem that what's going on in the problems. I
predict that 1st one is kind of challenging for me. So, I choose scholar's challenge # 4;
Choice B: water boy. The thing I notice about both problems is that they have kind of
same equation.

Basically, The problem is about a water boy. A water boy have water gallons for
football players. He predicted that the water is depend on the temperature of the day.
If the temperature is hot, then players consume more gallons than the good weather.
He also finds that amount of water consumed is linear function (function is just like a
machine that has input and output. Somehow, output is related to input). When it is
90 F, the players consume about 220 gallons of water. and when it is 76 F, the
players consume about 176 gallons of water. I predict that temperature is increasing
by 14 and gallons of water increasing by 42. My predict really help me to do this
problem. Now, I have to make the equation that represent this problem.

My equation is.....
y = 3x - 50
To see this equation, I wonder that...How did I get 50???
Y = 3x + b
220 = 3 (90) + b
220 = 270 + b
-270 = -270
-50 = b
I suppose "y" as 220 and I don't know that what we have on "b". So, the "x" value is 90
and I still don't know that what is "b." I subtract 270 from both sides. When I subtract
270 from both sides, +270 cut with -270 and I got -50 to subtract 270 from 220. That's
the value of y-axis.
In this equation, I also define the variable.
x = Temperature on the day
y = Gallons of water
In this equation, x is input and y is output. It's a function relation in which no two
ordered pairs have the same first coordinate.
Calculations:
Y = 3x - 50
178 = 3 (76) - 50
178 = 228 - 50
178 =178
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---
220 = 3 (90) -50
220 = 270 - 50
220 = 220
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---
262 = 3(104) - 50
262 = 312 - 50
262 = 262
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---
Now, based on these calculations, when you make a graph it will be linear. When you
graph the relationship between two quantities on a graph, you will get something that
looks like a line. It means for a relationship to be linear. Basically, you compare
something to other, you will get a line on the graph. For example, we are comparing
temperature to gallons of water and I will get linear graph.
Table:
Y = 3x - 50

X (temperature on a day) Y (gallons of water)
76 176 G
90 220 G
104 262 G
118 304 G

Rate of change is like the speed at which a variable changes the period of time. The
rate of change of my equation is..... ROC = 14/42 gallons and if the value of
temperature decreases in the equation than gallons of water will also going to
decrease. For example, if the temperature is 1 than 3 players will going to consume 3
gallons of water. ROC = 3 gallons per degree.
