CASE 2058 CASES OF ASME BOILER AND PRESSURE VESSEL CODE Approval Date: March 8, 1989 See Numeric Index for expiration and any reafrmation dates. Case 2058 SA-789, UNS S32304, With Higher Tensile Requirements Section VIII, Division 1 Inquiry: Under what conditions may tubing with an outside diameter (O.D.) not exceeding 1 in. and conforming to Specication SA-789, UNS S32304, except with minimum yield strength of 65 ksi and minimum tensile strength of 100 ksi, be used in welded construction under the rules of Section VIII, Division 1? Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that the material described in the Inquiry may be used in the construction of welded pressure vessels conforming to the rules of Section VIII, Division 1, subject to the following requirements. (a) Except for the minimum yield strength and the minimum tensile strength, the material shall conform to all the requirements of SA-789, UNS S32304. (b) The maximum nominal outside diameter of the tubes shall not exceed 1 in. and the maximum nominal wall thickness shall not exceed 0.125 in. See UHA-109. (2) A joint efciency factor of 0.85 has been applied to the stress values of the welded tubing. (c) The maximum allowable design stress values in tension shall be those listed in Table 1. (d) All other requirements pertaining to SA-789, UNS S32304, shall apply.
