A Peek into my Second Life

By

Meet Maria Murfin
Professor Mabrito’s Classroom
• My journey in Second Life began
when I went to a virtual auditorium
where an instructor in Second Life
taught me the basics of how to
navigate in this virtual world. Then
I proceeded to find the island
where my college of Purdue
Calumet was located. My
instructor gave me directions on
how to go to the university and
then onto his classroom. I
teleported to the classroom and I
noticed he had posted an
assignment on a slideshow for me
to complete. While there, I
dropped a message in his
mailbox.
• Then I set out to discover what the
other islands had to offer.
Observing a Mangrove Forest

• Mangrove Swamps are found in five

of the seven continents of the earth.
Adapted to growing in brackish waters
where salt and fresh mix, the plants
and animals of the mangrove swamps
form transition areas between those
two regions.

• The name mangrove is used for more

than 25 species of evergreen tropical
and subtropical trees that can grow in
low oxygen soils and extract
freshwater from saltwater through their
roots and leaves. With dense root
systems, the mangroves act as buffers
to protect coastal areas against storm
surges.
Observing a Waterfall
Swimming with the Dolphins
Indian Reservation

• I came across
this teepee and
went inside to
warm myself by
the campfire.
Home on the Range
• I observed buffalo along
with many other animals
and then I came across
an old house. When I
looked inside it had been
abandoned with random
pieces of furniture and
objects left behind. Then
I decided to take a rest
and decide on my next
course of action.
Playing Instruments

• At the nature
preserve, I came
across this piano
and drums and
decided to play
these
instruments.

Conclusion

• Here's a sample of some of my experiences in

Second Life. My first impressions of Second Life
were very dim. I had technology issues and I
was unfamiliar with how to navigate the island
successfully in order to get the full experience of
what Second Life had to offer. I came to the
realization that Second Life has no boundaries
and provides a level playing field for everyone.
I think Second Life will become part of my life
because there's so much more for me to
discover and explore.
