The major area of need is a lack of movement, physical fitness, and very low interest in life long wellness by most at Jordan High School. Being able to purchase these rowers will enable us to offer our students another option in seeking a healthy lifestyle beyond physical education. Our students are economically disadvantaged and most have never seen the inside of a membership gym. In our state, we are very fortunate to have the physical education state standards aligned with the national standards. They are grade level specific and rigorous. Identified weaknesses for this group of students include program emphasis, equipment, and lack of technology, professional development, and assessment.
2. Identify a Problem and Its Causes Our equipment is dated, limited, and used in large part for team sports, such as soccer, basketball and volleyball. At times, students must wait their turn to participate. The purchase of new equipment is very limited due to lack of funds. Individual sports such as, badminton and tennis have been brought into the program with outside loans of equipment in order to reach state goals. The physical education program is very limited in choosing activities and this has caused a lack of interest for students in recent years. New equipment, which is relevant to these technology native students, will provide additional opportunities to excite and motivate more students. Our school is not completely technology free, in that our PE program utilizes a limited amount of pedometers and has a one-time access to the lab to record individual Fitnessgram assessments. We also have one class set (50) of heart rate monitors for the thousands of students we service. Our gym is located in a building across campus from the school computer lab, and in the PE area/facilities we do not have access to computers or internet for study or data research. Using the Concept 2 rowers will enable us to integrate technology using the heart rate monitors we currently have in our proposed fitness lab. Students will be able to set goals and work toward individual fitness levels promoting healthy life styles.
3. Organizational Description
Our limited scheduling time and equipment has produced a program using a traditional team sport focus. All 9 th and 10 th grade students are required to take physical education (PE). PE is an elective for grades 11-12 in accordance with our state waiver. Only 20 percent of the high school students are involved in extracurricular sport programs and many students dont take the elective PE course available to them. Opening a fitness lab would make it possible to expose all students 9-12 in an individualized fitness/wellness program which would enhance their overall health awareness. This program would be extended to include or educate family and community members by making the lab available to them during non-school hours.
4. Define the Solution
We are looking to purchase sixty Concept 2 Rowers (Model D) to put in our new fitness lab. Purchasing 60 will provide us with a complete class set, ensuring that all students can actively participate during a class period. 5. GOALS Our goals are as follows: a. Offer new opportunities for participation in activities which promote healthy, physically fit life styles. b. Offer the use of the fitness lab for high school students who cannot participate in P.E. due to scheduling conflicts. c. Facilitate change in our physical education program from a sport oriented curriculum to a self-awareness oriented program. d. As students become the planner and implementer of their own programs, their physical fitness levels will improve as well as their attitude toward physical education e. Improving self-esteem and confidence in students to see a change in more participation in our school sponsored extracurricular sports programs. f. Physical testing scores will improve and all students will pass at least one or more of the Fitness Test. g. Provide the community with the opportunity to work out in the fitness lab during non- school hours.

8. Objectives 1. To provide rowers to expand the PE program choices which will influence future fitness activities.
2. Influence the movement time during PE class.
3. To offer the use of the fitness lab to students other than those taking PE.
4. To increase the number of people utilizing the room in order to improve their current fitness level.
5. To increase the number of students reaching the healthy zone on the Fitnessgram.
9. Projected Outcomes
1. A step count taken during selected activities and measured by the use of pedometers worn by students during the activity.
2. Recorded measurable target heart rate from the use of heart rate monitors.
3. 5% of 11-12 graders not enrolled in PE will participate in weekly workouts/lessons in the fitness lab.
4. At least 100 individuals from the community will visit the fitness lab each week.
5. Every student will pass at least three of the six components on the Fitnessgram Test.
6. Students will develop a personalized health portfolio containing their fitness data.
7. At least 50% of the teachers will utilize the fitness lab each week.
8. At least 50% of the teachers will incorporate rowers and heart rate monitors into their regular curriculum.
9. 75% of students will work within their target heart rate zone as measured by heart rate monitors and the PM4 monitors on the rowers.
10. 50% of students will show increased fitness scores on the Fitnessgram monitoring software.
10. Impact
The ability to open a Fitness Lab with 60 rowers will have a major impact on our overall physical education program. It will allow us to reach thousands of students and hundreds of parents and/or relatives of our students who come to use the room. It will offer tremendous help in the battle against obesity and boredom with the same old physical education unit offered at our school. A Fitness Lab will give our students a better understanding of activities that offered should they ever be able to have a gym membership. It will allow them to have the knowledge of another activity that can give them a lifetime of fitness.

Rowing and Heart Monitors
Sharon Moore-Pulsifer Rowing for Lifelong Fitness June 2014 Cardiovascular Endurance
Things to Do: 1) Jog Slowly 2) Walk as little as possible 3) Maintain the same pace throughout the run (do not run too fast to start) Exercises to Help: Running Walking (30 minutes or more at a time) Bike Riding Skateboarding Rowing ***** Swimming Jumping a rope ****NEW FOR 2014: We will be making a new rowing room which will house 60 Concept 2 Rowers for your classes to use. These rowers have a PM4 monitor on them which will link with the Suunto Heart Rater monitors we have. This is a tremendous opportunity to instruct your students in lifelong fitness activities (especially cardiorespiratory activities) the proper technique of rowing, and the benefits of working within ones target heart rate zone and reaching moderate to vigorous levels of exercise The Benefits of Rowing
Rowing is beneficial to the overall body: It helps with cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular strength and endurance. It is beneficial to those students who may have joint issues or want an alternative to running. Activity level is easily monitored with the PM4 monitor and Suunto heart rate monitors.
