ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardners Multiple Intelligences Goals: Students will be able to identify and describe aspects of being a responsible citizen. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will be able to identify concepts such as patriotism, respect for the law, civility and working with others. Students will be able to apply these aspects to their own lives. Process/Skills: Students will be able to list and draw different aspects of being a responsible citizen. Values/Dispositions: Students will be able to learn and understand how to respect one another and the law. ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardners Multiple Intelligences Rationale: This lesson is important because students need to understand what they can and should do to be a responsible citizen and respecting others. Standards State Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards C. Understand election processes and responsibilities of citizens. 14.C.1 Identify concepts of responsible citizenship including respect for the law, patriotism, civility and working with others. National NCSS Themes Civil ideals and Practices, Power/Authority and Government, Individual development.
Logical/Mathematical Logical/Mathematical In this activity students will be counting how many containers each family recycles. (estimating how many pop cans, milk cartons etc.) In the activity the students will be learning math as well as understanding why it is important to recycle.
Materials: -Cut outs of different items that can be recycled. -Paper -Pencil
Verbal/Linguistic Verbal/Linguistic In this activity students will write their own paper (a 2 or 3 sentences) why they are or are not responsible in class, must have 2 reasons why. Once every student is done, the students will read their paper, explaining to the class why or why not. This activity has students think to themselves what it takes to be responsible. Then as a group the class will discuss how they are responsible citizens, outside of school. Materials: -YouTube clip -Paper -Pencil Musical/Rhythmic Musical/Rhythmic Students will get in groups of three and create a song or a rap that they can sing to the class about being a responsible citizen- can link to any holidays that they have previously studied (patriotism). Within the rap they must include 3 examples and the rap or song must be at least 30 seconds long. The students can write it out and use the paper if they want to while performing. Materials: -Group sheet of paper -One group member will write Visual/Spatial Visual/Spatial In this activity, students will create a picture of the effect of being a responsible citizen. For example a student could choose helping others and the effect of that would be a closer and safer community. There are so many options for this visual activity. Body/Kinesthetic Body/Kinesthetic In this activity students will be paired with another student. They will create a two parts to a skit. The first part being responsible for their actions, and the second not caring (not working with others) etc. The students will then present their skit-making the situation seem real and come to life.
Materials: -Paper -Pencil -Skit Interpersonal Interpersonal In this activity students will be assigned groups. Within each group, they will create a poster on a way or two ways they can be a better and more responsible citizen. Each groups poster should have all the group members names, the ways in which they can be more responsible, a picture, and how they can influence other people to be more responsible citizens. In this activity students are interacting and working together with one another. Intrapersonal Intrapersonal In this activity students will reflect on their life so far. They will answer this question, If someone were to ask you to define how to be a responsible citizen in one sentence how would you define it? Intrapersonal is about students reflecting and doing a journal is an awesome way to get feedback on what the students are thinking and learning.
Materials: -Writing notebooks -Pencils -Prompt Naturalistic Naturalistic In this activity students will take a field trip within the community. As a class they will decide on one way they can all improve and be a better and more responsible citizen. For example: it may be picking up trash, or helping elderly people. Doing this activity will allow student to apply what they have been learning throughout all the activities and show what they have learned.
