MATHEMATICS SIXTH GRADE

Course Overview/Description:
In Grade 6, instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication
and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions
and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing,
interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.

Course Requirements:
Complete weekly quizzes and quarterly exams/tests
Maintain a class notebook and journal
Complete all daily homework and class assignments

Course Expectations:
The students are expected to complete daily class assignments as well as homework nightly that will be assigned from
Monday-Thursday. Students are also expected to follow the classroom rules as well as respecting one another and being
prepared for class with textbook, notebook/paper, homework and notes from the previous day.

Grading Components
The students course grade for each semester will be based on the following criteria

Academic Grading Scale for this course are as follows
A 90 and above
B 80 89
C 70 79 F 69 and below



Notebooks/Journals
Students will complete all of their class work and homework in their student notebooks. The notebooks will be graded
periodically for completion. Some assignments in the notebook will be graded based on content. Students are also required
to write responses in math journals, which are provided by the teacher. They will write in the journals at least 3 times a
week on a mathematical topic or concept taught/discussed in class.

Homework is a key component of our educational process. Students will be given homework assignments, which will
either reinforce basic math skills or reinforce concepts learned in class.

Students are expected to complete all assignments neatly and on time. Assignments not meeting this standard will incur a
penalty.
After-School Tutorial
Tutorial is available after school on Wednesdays from 4:05 5:00 P.M., if a student needs homework help, remediation, or
enrichment activities. Please arrange to have transportation from school. After-school All Star applications are available in
the front office.

Extension Activities
Students who finish work early and students who show previous mastery of current concepts will be given opportunities to
complete additional activities to extend their learning. Students who have low overall averages will also be given an
opportunity to improve their grade by completing extension activities.


Make-Up Work Due To an Absence
Each student is responsible for obtaining and completing missed assignments due to an excused or pre-approved absence. It
is the students responsibility to request makes up work for work missed during an absence. Students will have the number
of days absent plus one day to make up missed assignments.

Classroom Rules/Expectations:
Bring all books and materials to class.
Be on time.
No eating candy or chewing gum in class at any time.
Respect others and yourself.
Complete all assignments. (on time please)
Be prepared for class by reviewing notes prior to class. Stay on task.

Discipline Guidelines
In order to maintain an environment conducive for learning, students must follow the class procedures. If a student does not
follow these guidelines, the teacher will use a combination of methods to maintain order: Verbal reprimand, time out,
seating changes, student/teacher conference, Student writing assignments, parent/teacher communication and administrative
referrals.
