• In formal social influence- when a person is not sure of what to do in a social

situation- influence of another person may be great

• MiL- PPs is teacher and therefore not confidant in how to behave as it is


ambiguous and unusual to them.
So experimenter as an authority figure giving orders provides
strong social information about what to do.

When informational social influence is low = obedience to authority is low

• Normative pressures are low where legitimacy is questioned = low levels of


obedience
• Legitimate setting and authority figure (experimenter) normative pressure to
obey authority is high.
