2 Running Head: STUDENT TEACHING

Abstract
The world is full of teachers, but most teachers did not just jump into teaching feet first.
Being a student teacher can give one the opportunities and tools they need to be a great teacher.
"Being informed on matters of school policy as these relate to school organizations,
management, and administration in general, and to student teachers/interns in particular"
("Frequently asked questions:," ). This is important because young teachers can learn from other
teachers. For example what to do and what not to do in a classroom and in the school. Taking the
extra steps is a great sign that one is truly interested in becoming and teacher.

It is sad to say that there are a few people in society think teachers in younger grades,
such as 4-3, are seen a babysitters. A part off me is offended and another part finds their opinions
humorous. If we think back to all we learned in our first years of school, those years seem to be
the most important. In Preschool we learned out numbers, colors and letters. In Kindergarten we
counted all the way to one hundred and meet new friends and how to play well with others.
Teachers in elementary schools do not only teach what is in the text books, they are teaching
character. I honestly do not think the character of being a teacher can be learned or forced upon
people. Being a teacher is something a few people have the passion for. The goal in the next
eighteen years is for teaching to grow at a gradual pace. "Employment of kindergarten and
elementary school teachers is expected to grow by 17 percent from 2010 to 2020" ("Kindergarten
and elementary," 2012).
Unlike a nine-five job, teaching is a job that never ends. Teachers need to be role models.
Even when their students graduate and are gone they still need to have good character because
people are always watching. Even when I was in school I thought all teachers did was give us
homework and yell at us. Looking back at how much my peers and I had grown, it really makes
me appreciate my elementary teachers. Teachers do much more than just hand out homework
and tell students what to do and what not to do.
Many different teaching fields exist, the most obvious is different ages and grade levels. I
took the time to research about student teaching. Student teaching is a great experience and
hands on opportunities for aspiring teachers. " It is designed to be an intensive, full-time
classroom experience allows the pre-service teacher to further develop and refine the skills,
competencies and dispositions needed to be an effective educator in todays schools"
("Frequently asked questions:," ). Student teachers work closely with experienced teachers and

professors to become aspiring teachers in the future. Being a student teacher there are many rules
and guidelines to follow. Knowing all the rules in the school and the classroom is a must for all
student teachers. This is so they know what to expect when they are teaching on their own.
Another major responsibility is "being informed on matters of school policy as these relate to
school organizations, management, and administration in general, and to student teachers/interns
in particular" ("Frequently asked questions:," ). Even though there are many responsibilities to
student teaching, there is an endless number of rewards. The time one spends student teaching
will be an advantage on a rsum when finding a teaching job in a competitive school.
Being a student teacher is much different than just observing a classroom. Other teachers
are just trying to help so students teachers should be ready for constructive criticism. Teachers
are not going to "sugar coat" things for student teachers because teachers want their student
teachers to be the best that they can be. To be a student teacher one must "have at least 90 credit
hours in a University" (). In all honesty it depends on the different regions on payment in student
teaching. But most give students college credit for the hours that the student teach.
Not only are there different types of teaching fields, but as the book tells us, there are
many types of student teaching fields as well. Kauchak and Eggen talk about the student teacher,
Melinda Garcia, that had been in a school and had seven students of her own (2008). This shows
the reasonability's that Garcia had without an ever day and all day responsibility. This is a great
way for student teachers to get their hands experience, without them feeling overwhelmed.
A teacher is not something that just came to mind over night. I have, for the past seven
years. The benefits of being a teacher are not as great as the challenges, but I'm willing to look
past all of that. "You will have a limited amount of time during the day to plan" says Kauchak

and Eggen (2008). This means that for teachers their work does not end at three o'clock, and I am
okay with that. I have wanted to be a teacher to help students that do not know how to help
themselves. Chapter 1 in the Intro to Teaching text has really helped me look at all the ins and
outs of teaching young children.
