Activity: Develop a Special Day Schedule

Description:
I worked with a small group of teachers to develop a special day schedule for 4
th
and 5
th

grade students at the Intermediate Building. In creating the schedule we made sure to
consider all testing accommodations and re!uirements as well as the teacher contract
re!uirements. "e made sure that everything was e!uita#le and that students needs were
kept at the forefront.
"hat went well$
I worked with the e%ceptional education teacher the guidance counselor and the li#rarian
&who is the chair for related arts' to develop this schedule. (his was a huge advantage for
many reasons. It was e%tremely important to work with the e%ceptional education teacher
#ecause she was a#le to tell me how many students would re!uire pull out
accommodations. I also had to work with the )S* teachers #ut that will #e discussed
#elow. Denise and I were a#le to sit down and determine how many groups would #e
needed and which accommodations each group would re!uire. After meeting with
Denise we met with +r. Anderson our guidance counselor who is also our testing
coordinator. (his was necessary #ecause he was a#le to tell us the time factors for each
portion of the test as well as other testing details. ,inally meeting with +rs. -alletta
the related arts chair allowed me to run my ideas a#out how we would run related arts so
that all teachers would get their necessary #reak without overloading the related arts
teachers.
"hat did not$
Although I had asked the )S* teachers to list all students who would re!uire the )S*
version of the (.A/0 thus alternate accommodations as well I did not receive a
complete list until a few days #efore the test was to #egin. I received an initial test #ut
the list kept changing and the final list was given two days #efore testing was to #egin.
(his caused a great deal of stress and could have caused a pro#lem with the amount of
testing materials if the amount of students that we ended up with had #een drastically
different.

"ork ahead of the game1 do not wait until the last minute to get the schedule
completed2 (his will allow you to give the schedule to some key helpers to look at the
schedule to see if they see any glaring mistakes2 3ou must always remem#er that you
too will make mistakes and it is okay to ask for help2 -ive deadlines and make people
stick to those deadlines2
