Activity: Conduct a Facilities Analysis for ADA

Description: The ADA checklist for existing facilities was used to analyze East Brainerd
Eleentary !chool"
#hat went well$
The school is well e%uipped with raps and the hallways throughout the &uilding are
wide enough for wheelchairs to travel through the without any a'or issues" The front
of the &uilding is well e%uipped with paved walkways( however) the only entrance would
&e fro the side of the school" The ain entrance into the school is accessed via a long
flight of stairs and it is not wheelchair accessi&le" The only other option is to enter
through the &ackside of the school" For the ost part) the school 'anitorial staff does do a
good 'o& of keeping the grounds clean so parents) students) and other visitors who are in
wheelchairs will not have to worry a&out de&ris getting in their way"
#hat did not$
The outside of the school is the area that sees to &e the area of ost concern" #e do
not have designated handicap parking" The spaces that were once designated as handicap
spaces have felt the effects of tie as the paint has long worn off" The parking lot would
need to &e reconfigured so that we could address this issue) as well as the fact that our
school does not have suita&le cur&s that eet ADA re%uireents" Another issue that
would need to &e addressed is that we would have to install power*assisted or autoatic
doors since none of our doors are autoatic" #e also do not have any signage that is
written in raised letters or +rade ,, Braille lettering" Finally our hearing ipaired
students and visitors- needs are also not &eing et"
+iven the chance to do it again) how would you do it &etter$
#e do need to address the fact that soe of our raps do not have handrails" This is an
easy fix and , would ake sure that handrails &e installed as soon as possi&le" Another
issue that we face with our raps is that they do not all have skid strips to prevent
slipping fro occurring" This too is another easy fix and , would address it &y adding
non*slip surface aterials to the raps" #hen dealing with the parking spaces) , would
ake sure that we et the re%uireents for total spaces versus accessi&le spaces and ,
would also ake sure that we addressed the fact that our school does not have van
accessi&le spaces" These spaces would &e created and we would also ake sure that they
are identified so that all visitors were a&le to park in the appropriate spaces" Cur&s would
&e &uilt in the &ack of the &uilding and we would pave the gravel lot that leads up to the
&ack entrance" Autoatic doors would need to &e installed and signs and roo nu&ers
written in raised letters or +rade ,, Braille would need to &e installed" Finally we would
need to address the needs of our hearing ipaired population &y aking sure that we
have installed a hearing*aid copati&le phone" #e would address this issue &y
contacting the phone copany and having the install these particular kinds of phones"
#e ay also consider installing a text phone and aking sure that volue controls are
added"
