Take Home Learning Objectives assessment (Exam) GEOLOGY 101
Due beginning of class on Thursday April 3, 2014
You may refer to your notes and text but not to internet sources. You may exchange views with other members of this class (including at SI sessions) while thinking about the questions but once you start taking the exam, it must be an individual effort. Answer the five questions (each worth 20 points) as distinctly as possible on sheets of paper stapled together with your name on each page. I would prefer you type your answers but I will accept neatly written text. For each question, you must also describe the Key Learning Point you took away from the topic. This KLP will each count 25% of the question answer. Also turn in this question sheet, signing it, confirming that you completed the exam in full compliance with the Aggie Honor Code. I ________________, completed this exam in full compliance with the Aggie Honor Code ______________________________(Signature) 1) Explain how geologists employ the scientific method to study the geologic, geomorphic, hydrologic, physical, chemical, and biologic processes that constantly reshape the Earth. Discuss how geologists study these processes by iteratively testing laws and theories by generating hypotheses, making predictions, and testing these predictions through observation and give two examples of how geologists have used these methods to test widely theories and hypotheses.
2) Describe the theory of plate tectonic and how it explains the origin and continued development of the major features of Earth (including volcanoes, mountains, earthquakes, ocean basins)
3) Explain the differences between the three rock groups (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary) and how each fits into the plate tectonic theory.
4) Define how coastal landforms are formed through the work of waves and wind and how those coastal form dissipate wave energy.
5) List at least three types of resources the Earth provides that are critical to human society and describe how Earth processes have made those resources available to humans.
