Hi students! We are learning about the theme of environment. Yesterday we watched video
clips of environmental issue from a cartoon movie, Dr. Seusses The Lorax about excess logging.
There are many harmful effects of the activity to environment and to human. All of you did great
job in creating posters on effects of excess logging to environment.

For today, we will learn about writing a speech (to persuade someone to do good to
environment). These are what you need to know about writing this essay.

Speeches and Talks

Opening address
Greet and address the audience properly.
Greet them in the order of importance, starting with the principal or guest of honour,
followed by the teachers and then the students.
o Example: The principal, teachers and fellow students
Introduce oneself (yourself) as the speaker.
Thank the organizer for opportunity to address audience.
Mention the topic of speech.
State the purpose of the speech.
Body of speech
Introduce the main idea.
Elaborate with examples and relevant details.
Make sure the audience can follow the sequence of your speech.
Have enough content to interest the audience.
Deal with one point in one paragraph.
Use phrases like:

Use humour in speech but do not overdo it.
Use relevant examples and details to support your points.
Use simple, direct and clear language.

Closing of Speech
Refer to the main idea again.
Summarize the points.
Thank the audience.
Things to remember:
1. Speeches or talks which are delivered on formal or social occasions by a host or guest
speaker of an event, to address an issue or to convey an information.
2. Speeches in schools are usually given by the Chairman of school clubs and societies or the
Head Prefect.
3. Speeches are also given at seminars on specific topics. It is also to welcome, thank or bid
someone farewell.
