Technology Skill Needs Assessment

ITTS Assessment Purpose: To assess teacher skills in technology literacy and to
identify the needs for professional development with the objective of preparing the
teachers for the implementation of new technologies.

Indicators: 6 skill set categories and 89 Indicators presented as multiple choice and
simulated performance tasks.

Chart 1. Canyon Day Junior High School Teacher Scores by skill set.

Results: Canyon Day teachers scored the highest in Planning, Management, and
Instruction. The lowest scores were in basic operations and research. Based on
conversations, observations and individual scores only 10% of the teachers are
tech savy. Understanding and carrying out basic operations are essential and
necessary to build on other skills. This skill set will be the primary focus of the tech
coach during the first phase of implementation.

In comparison to other schools in the district, Canyon Day Junior High scored the
lowest with an average score of 80.5% (refer ITTS Inventory of Teacher Skills).

Recommendations: In order to improve teacher technology skills and to adopt and
adapt to new technology, teachers must have continuous professional development
and technology support. The following are in the planning stage and will be carried
throughout the school year:

I. Weekly professional development (20-60 minutes of Tech Training) based
on teachers needs and skill levels. Essential training needed:

Functions of new devices
Policies and procedures
Software and applications

II. Just-in-time embedded coaching

III. Technology support (provided by tech coach and IT Department)
IV. A website with web-based tutorials and other technology resources will be
developed and available on the school districts website to reach a district
wide audience. (developed by the Tech Ready Team)

V. Social media site with news, events and resources (developed and
maintained by the Tech Ready Team)
