Good Times Dice Game

Grade 2

Below you will find a list of the materials as well as the directions of the activity you will be participating
in with your child. I have also enclosed the supplies and a hand pump to inflate the dice .If you have any

Good Times Dice Game

By participating in this activity, your child will become more familiar with the operation of multiplication
using the numbers 1-6.
Common Core Mathematics Standard:
Operations and Algebraic Thinking 3.OA
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division.
1. Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups
of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as
5 7.
4. Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole
numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the
equations 8 ? = 48, 5 = 3, 6 6 = ?.

Materials:

2 large inflatable dice (3 if you want to complete the extension)


1 dry erase board
1 dry erase marker
1 piece of paper for scorekeeping
1 pen/pencil for scorekeeping
1 large pack of assorted erasers
A pad of multi colored sticky notes

Player 1 rolls the first die.


Player 1 writes that number (in numerical form) on the dry erase board.
Player 1 writes an x sign on the board.
Player 1 rolls the second die.
Player 1 writes that number (in numerical form) on the dry erase board.
Player 1 writes an = sign and an answer box on the dry erase board.
Player 1 completes the multiplication problem, and player 2 checks the work.
Player 1 then represents the multiplication problem using addition.
If player 1 answers the problem correctly, and represents it correctly with addition, he or she
receives 2 points.
Now its player 2s turn!
Player 2 follows the same steps as player 1.
Continue following this sequence until one of the players reaches the designated amount of
points.
The first player to 20 points wins the game!

Simplifying and Extending the Game


Simplification: If your child seems to have trouble figuring out the math problems out on the
board, number, visual representation of the groupings can be used, e.g., 3 groups of 5 sticky notes or
erasers to represent 3x5. You can also break the problem down into an addition problem for your child
(5+5+5=3x5) to demonstrate how multiplication and addition are related. I have included sticky notes
and erasers with the other supplies for the activity.

Extension: If your child seems to breeze through the multiplication problems using 2 dice, a 3rd die
can be added to create multiple step problems. This should only be done if you feel that your child has a
firm understanding of the multiplication process.
