Definition/Description: A condition in which one or more of the basic psychological processes in understanding or using
language are deficient.
Strategies, Accommodations & Modifications: Token reinforcement system- reward child based on achievement with
tokens, can use later to buy prize. Give instructions verbally as well as written, shorten, simplify instructions. Change
question level.

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: 397-401
Definition/Description: Symptoms include difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior
and very high levels of activity. Inattentive- hard to organize, finish tasks, pay attention to details, follow instructions,
easily distracted and forgets daily routines. Hyperactive-Impulsive- Fidgets and talks a lot, cant sit still for long, run,
jump, climb, feels restless, trouble with impulsivity, interrupt, grab things, struggles waiting turn.
Strategies, Accommodations & Modifications: seat child away from windows. Provide frequent review. Put desk close to
blackboard. Provide organizers for desk material.

Emotional/Behavior Disorder: 180-190
Definition/Description: Emotional- behavior problems frequently internal exhibited by difficulties expressing emotions
evoked in normal everyday experiences. Behavior- Conditions in which the emotional or behavioral responses
significantly differ from those of their peers and seriously impact their relationships.
Strategies, Accommodations & Modifications: Help students develop their own learning strategies. Have students use
the buddy system/ peer modeling. Use specific rather than general praise.

Definition/Description: Difficulties in producing language or comprehending what others say.

Definition/Description: A range of functioning among many dimensions, related to social communicative and social
interaction functioning with impairments in repertoire of behavior. Typically considered to be autism, Aspbergers
syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified.
Strategies, Accommodations & Modifications: repeat directions, changing words if needed. Emphasize strengths,
therapy sessions, specialized support (aides).

Hearing Loss: 318-335
Definition/Description: Deafness- a hearing loss greater than 90 db. Vision is primary input and cant understand speech
through the ear. Hard of hearing- a sense of hearing that is deficient but somewhat functional.
Strategies, Accommodations & Modifications: provide visual cues, use hand signals to cue behaviors, provide support
(aide) that can sign, provide guided practice.
