The Hoola Hoop Relay
Whole Class

Standards:
1.1.2 Travel over, under, in front of, behind, and through objects and over, under, in
front of, and behind partners, using locomotor skills.

1.5.6 Identify and demonstrate effective practices for working with a group without
interfering with others.

Content Objective/Learning Outcome: Students will be able to work with a group to
pass a hoola hoop through their bodies while standing in a closed circle (holding
hands). Students will be able to explain the importance of, and demonstrate teamwork
during the activity.
Language Objective/Language Learning Outcome: Students will be able to explain
the importance of teamwork, and the characteristics of teamwork verbally and in writing.
Assessment:
Formative Assessment Tasks: I will observe students participating in the activity in
their groups. I will ask students about the importance of teamwork, and they will
respond in their journals. Select students will share with the group. I will ask
students, What does teamwork look and sound like?

Summative Assessment Task: I will observe students participating in the activity as a
whole class. I will ask students, How did teamwork help you complete the HOOLA
HOOP RELAY?
Materials Needed: 6 hoola hoops
Differentiation: I will provide a sentence stem and verbal sample responses for the
journal writing portion of the lesson (Teamwork is important because). Students will
talk with a partner about the importance of teamwork before sharing with the whole
group. Groups will be designed based on behavioral qualities and teamwork abilities.
The lesson will be explicitly modeled with a small group inside the classroom before we
go outside. A sentence stem will be used for the lesson wrap up (Teamwork helped
because).

Instructional Sequence:
- Introduction
During Morning Journal Time:
Provide the following prompt for the morning journal writing time, Why is teamwork
important?
o Sentence stem: Teamwork is important because
While students are writing, I will provide sample responses using the sentence stem.
o For example, Teamwork is important because it helps you accomplish your
goals, or Teamwork is important because it allows you to work together.
Ask a few students to share their responses with the whole group.
Before Lesson:
Think-Pair-Share: Why is teamwork important? What does teamwork look and sound
like?
- Body
INSIDE CLASSROOM:
Call 4 students up to the front of the class to help model the activity.
Students will join hands.
Place hoola hoop in between two students.
Explain the HOOLA HOOP RELAY: You must pass the hoola hoop all the way
around the circle. You are finished when it gets back to its original place. When this
happens, the whole group sits down to show that you are done. There are only two
rules to the hoola hoop relay.
o 1. You have to hold hands the WHOLE time.
o 2. Use teamwork!
Small group demonstrates the game.
o Stop to point out things such as: helping the person next to you by raising
your arm to slide the hoola hoop over their head, cheering somebody else on,
communicating with your group, sitting down when done, being in control of
their bodies, holding hands the whole time, etc.
Ask somebody to explain how the HOOLA HOOP RELAY works and what the rules
are.
Explain: The WHOLE class will be working together as a team. When the game
begins I will start a timer. I will stop the timer when all the groups are sitting down.
Each time we play, we will try to beat our time.
OUTSIDE CLASSROOM:
Put students into groups of 4 and hand out hoola hoops.
Spread the groups out safely on the grass.
Play the game. Give the class a new goal to beat each time. (repeat 3 times)

Combine groups, so that there are 8 students and 2 hoola hoops per group. (repeat
2 times)
Challenge the class to complete the HOOLA HOOP RELAY as a whole group with
all 6 hoola hoops.
Collect materials, and go back inside.
- Conclusion
Think-Pair-Share: How did teamwork help you complete the HOOLA HOOP
RELAY?
o Teamwork helped because

P.E. Lesson Reflection:
First of all, I had a ton of fun teaching my P.E. lesson. It was a fun experience to
get out of the classroom and get my students moving. It worked out well to explain all
the directions and expectations inside the classroom. I had all the students seated on
the rug and modeled with a small group. I also integrated some writing in with the
lesson. I liked giving my students the opportunity to brainstorm some ideas about
teamwork during their morning journal time so that they had some ideas fresh in their
mind when we started the lesson. I think by doing this, my students came to the
conversation a bit more prepared and confident to share an idea. I am also happy with
my decision to make the Hoola Hoop Relay a group effort, instead of having groups
compete against each other. I made it very explicit that the whole class would have to
work together and cheer each other on in order to complete the relay. It was great to
see all of the groups cheering each other on during the relay and working together to
beat their time together. I think setting up the activity in this way was really important for
my group of 1
st
graders, because they can get a little too competitive at times.
It would have been nice to have closed the lesson with another small writing
piece, since I opened it with journal time. Perhaps students could have written the
closing statement about teamwork prior to the verbal discussion.
