FIELD NOTES
1. Describe the content of the lesson that you observed.

The Truth About Cockroaches
The students learned about true and false facts about cockroaches.

2. Describe the instructional strategy or strategies (e. g., cooperative learning, peer
tutoring, think alouds) that were utilized in the teaching of those concepts.

The students participated in cooperative learning during the true and false activity. The
teacher divided the class into two groups and had them come up with their own group
name using an insect (ie: Crazy Caterpillars and the Mega Mosquitos). Each group also had
to decide on two team leaders to hold up the true and false signs. Finally, the students
had to work together to converse about deciding whether or not the statements were true
or false.

3. Please describe if and how the teacher utilized the following during the lesson:
models, the arts, and technology.

The teacher had an anchor chart to display the team names and the points that were given
to each team each time the points were earned. She also had the students create their own
true and false signs to hold up to answer each question.

4. Describe the assessment strategies that the teacher used to assess the content
knowledge of the student. These assessments might be formative or summative.

During formative assessment, the teacher walked around and observed what the students
were saying when deciding whether or not the answer was true or false. During
summative assessment, the teacher had the students write what they learned about
cockroaches in their writing journals.

Take notes on student engagement. Pick several students to look at over the course of the
lesson.
The students struggled agreeing on a team name. The teacher timed the students so
there wouldnt be wasted time.
When choosing team captains to hold up the true and false signs, the students
couldnt agree so the teacher had the students pick a number 1-20.
As the teacher called out the facts about the cockroaches, the students were engaged
by talking and working collaboratively to agree on each answer.
One student refused to participate so the teacher had to call the supervisor to come
talk to her.
As I walked around the room, I could hear each child sharing their opinion and
taking turns listening to one another.
