ABOUT US

Mission Statement
The Frederick Symphony Orchestra is committed to enriching the cultural climate of
Frederick, Maryland and its neighboring communities through a combination of
educational outreach programs, community involvement, and affordable
entertainment. The organization strives to enhance community life by providing
outstanding classical music programs that inspire, educate, and entertain. Members
of the FSO consistently show a strong commitment to artistic leadership by working
diligently and with integrity to care for and nurture excellence, collegiality, and
creativity. The FSO accomplishes this though the following core values and long-
term goals:

Core Values:
Produce music of the highest quality through live performances centered on
symphony and pops concerts
Promote an environment of enrichment, fellowship and respect
Respect our heritage as a volunteer orchestra and cultivate a legacy for the
future
Move forward with an emphasis on creativity and originality

Long-Term Goals: in order to drive our behavior and activities now and 10 20
years into the future, our vision for the future is centered on the following long-term
goals:
Take a leadership role in the development of an appropriate performing arts
center in Frederick, MD. Until that facility is available, occasionally perform
at other Maryland State venues for classical music (e.g., Strathmore Hall in
Bethesda, MD)
Be a vital member of the community through performances, educational
outreach, and engagement of stakeholders at all levels; to include creating
partnerships with other arts organizations
Continue to mature and achieve financial viability, capability and stability

About the FSO
Founded in 1997, the Frederick Symphony Orchestra (FSO) is a community
orchestra committed to enriching the cultural climate of Frederick, Maryland and its
surrounding communities through educational outreach, community involvement,
and affordable entertainment. The volunteer orchestra is composed of the areas
finest professional and amateur musicians. FSO performs a six-concert series
annually at the Jack B. Kussmaul Theater at Frederick Community College. Musical
selections range from classical favorites to holiday hits to pops selections, among
others.

FSO has performed for the past sixteen seasons under the direction of Elisa Koehler,
who stepped down from her position at the conclusion of the 2013-2014 season.
Concertmaster Amy Oswald will step in to lead the FSO during the 2014-2015
season until a permanent music director is found.

In 1999, FSO adopted its own Young Artist Competition to showcase Fredericks
talented young musicians. FSO is committed to keeping youth involved in music
with family-friendly concerts and educational programs implemented in local school
systems. Opportunities for children of all ages are available.

FSO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community orchestra, governed by its by-laws and the
members of its Board of Directors. The orchestra has enjoyed support from the
Maryland State Arts Council, the Frederick Arts Council, local sponsors, and
generous private donors.
