Speed Geeking
Constructivist Workshop Plan

Overview:

Speed Geeking is a format for teacher professional development in which
teachers will be briefly introduced to three different technologies available within
their school. Teachers will be divided into small groups and will rotate through the
three sessions for approximately 15 minutes each. After this introduction to each
technology, teachers will choose one on which they would like to focus for the
remainder of the day. They will collaborate with their colleagues as they learn
practical ways of applying their new knowledge to their current practice. Teachers
will draw from their classroom experience, their understanding of their students
needs, and their curricular objectives

Purpose of the workshop:

Many schools throughout the Calgary Board of Education continue to
champion 21
st
Century Learning by infusing learning technologies in their
classrooms. By doing so, educators increase student engagement through the
personalization of learning and providing for an authentic learning environment
through the use of digital technologies. The purpose of this workshop is to
introduce teachers to the available technologies within their school and to
provide practical ideas and supports regarding the implementation of these
technologies.

Objectives:
1. Facilitate the personalization of learning thus allowing students to share
in the responsibility for their own education
2. Increase student engagement by allowing for more authentic learning
situations through the use of digital technologies.
3. Present choice to teachers in their professional learning.
4. Enable teachers to tailor instruction and assessment to individual
learners.

Duration:
- Pre-workshop activity: 15 minutes
- In-person workshop: 1 hour
- Post-workshop activities: 1-3 hours, depending on participant engagement.

Audience:
- Bishop Pinkham School teaching staff
