II All About Angles Jays Education
INTRODUCTION
All About Angles is a step to step carefully sequenced students workbook and a practical teachers resource book to support teaching the concept of angles.
The activities are designed for students to learn to identify, classify, group and measure angles. The focus is on the seven advanced types of angles; complementary, supplementary, angles at a point, alternate angles, vertically opposite, corresponding and cointerior angles.
The emphasis is on visual skills, visual imagery and visual processing, reasoning and analysis. It is a step towards activities that move from problems toward investigations. Students are given experience in identifying figures in many different orientations.
Students need direct instructions, exploration and reflections to be able to progress from one level to the next. Students are expected to acquire skills that enhance the childs ability to solve problems.
Visual skills that are reinforced in this workbook include: recognising similarities and differences, picking out common properties of geometric figures, recognising objects that have been turned around, inverted or viewed from different directions.
The use of 12 questions (problems) on each page makes the program compatible with the Mini LUK self checking system. Each page has a grid with answers and a Mini LUK code key. Students can check their answers in the grid, cross or colour the box with matching answers or/and use key to form Mini LUK patterns. Instructions how to use the Mini LUK for self checking are on page VII. III All About Angles Jays Education 2. Right angle. A right angle is an angle of 90. It is a quarter of a turn. The angle is usually marked by a little square. Types of Angl es 1. Acute angle. Acute means sharp. An acute angle is bigger then 0 and smaller then 90. a < 90
a An angle is the amount of turn between 2 lines around a common point. Angles are measured in degrees (40) using a protractor. 3. Obtuse angle. An obtuse angle is larger then 90 but smaller then 180. Obtuse angles don't look as sharp as acute angles. They are called blunt in some books.

A straight angle is an angle of 180, it is made up of two right angles. It is half a turn. 4. Straight angle. IV All About Angles Jays Education 5. Reflex angle. A reflex angle is larger then 180 and smaller then 360. It is more then half a turn. To find the size of a reflex angle, measure the smaller angle, formed by the arms of the reflex angle, and subtract this from 360. 360 - 60 = 300 a = 300

The students like to work with the tiles, searching for the numbers and looking forward to be rewarded by a pattern. They think of LUK as a game.
How to use the mini LUK System.
The lid of the mini LUK tray (box) is divided into 12 blank squares, the base is divided into 12 numbered squares. There are 12 numbered tiles to work with.
Step 1. Place the 12 tiles in sequence from 1 to 12 into the blank squares on the lid of the miniLUK box. or Place the 12 tiles in sequence from 1 to 12 on the table ready to be used.
Step 2. Choose your worksheet (page).
Step 3. Pick up tile number 1 and place it under or next to the number 1 problem. Work out the problem and look for the answer (angle size e.g. 30).Next or under it is a small number. Find this number on the base of the mini LUK box. Place the tile number 1 onto that number. Proceed to answer the rest of the questions in the same way.
Step 4. When finished and all tiles are placed on the correct squares, the task is completed. Close the lid of the box and turn the Mini LUK over sideways. Open the lid and a geometrical pattern will be formed by the back of the tiles.
Step 5. Match the pattern in the box with the pattern on the bottom of the page. If the patterns match, well done! You have not made a single mistake! If the pattern is not quite correct, but is recognisable, you have still done a good job. Mini LUK Self Checking System VII All About Angles Jays Education
