Nu Chapter Executive Board Minutes

Nu Chapter of Alpha State Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at 1:30
P.M. at the Wimberley Community Library, Wimberley, Texas for an Executive Board Meeting.

Incoming Nu President Sandra Morales, First Vice President Loretta Eiben, Second Vice President Charlotte
Evans, Recording Secretary Kathy Carriker, Treasurer Tonda Frady, Committee Chairs Susan Pulis, Nadyne
Gartman, Carol Grimm, and Joan Winters were present. Member Jenny Turney attended on behalf of
Committee Chair Dr. Evelyn Barrett. Recording Secretary Robin Estepp was unable to attend.

Call to Order, Welcome and Introductions
o Incoming Nu President Sandra Morales called the meeting to order at 1:40 P.M.
o Attendees introduced themselves and explained their duties for the coming biennium.
Short report on Alpha State Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Convention in Lubbock, Texas
o Nadyne Gartman reported that the Alpha State Convention had 846 attendees.
o Nu Chapter had six members attend the Convention.
o Incoming International DKG President Dr. Lynn Schmidt attended the Alpha State Convention.
Area 7 Workshop
o Incoming Nu President Morales urged everyone to register before July 1, 2014, for the
September 13, 2014, Area 7 workshop to be held in Elgin.
Nu Chapter Program Topics, Locations, Dates, and Times
o Incoming Nu President Morales stated Cheryl Blake has format for the Yearbook for Programs
and will share that information with Loretta Eiben, Nu Programs Chair.
o Incoming Nu President Morales has invited all Nu members to a Meet and Greet Tea at her
home in Wimberley, Texas on Sunday, August 24, 2014.
Officers will bring pick up appetizers consisting of finger sandwiches, fruits, and demi
desserts.
Robin Estepp will bring various tea cups and napkins. Officers are encouraged to bring
cake stands for tables.
Morales suggested members present names of potential members at this meeting. The
potential members would be voted on in September and initiated in October.
o Incoming Nu President Morales reported the Tuesday, September 16, 2014, and October 21,
2014, meetings are confirmed at 6:00 P.M. at the First Christian Church, San Marcos, Texas.
o Programs for September and October.
Charlotte Evans will invite Carole Buchanan, Legislative Chair for T.R.T.A. District 13 to
present an informative program. Carole will be given her choice of September or
October 21, 2014. The October meeting will be Nu Chapters first choice.
Incoming Nu President Morales will contact Evelyn Barron Alpha State Texas Educational
Foundation (ASTEF) President or Nita Scott ASTEF Membership Chairperson for the
September program. This program will be an informational program on what ASTEF is
and what benefits it has for DKG members.
o Incoming Nu President Morales reported that the November 18, 2014, meeting is confirmed at
the Chapel of the Hills, Wimberley, Texas at 6:00 P.M.
The program topic will be Global Awareness.
Each member will bring an item from trips they have taken to be used as ice breaker
discussions.
The dinner will feature international foods.
A silent auction of items members donate will be a fundraiser for World Fellowship.
o Morales stated that the December program will be on the 9th or 16th, 2014, at the Chapel of
the Hills, Wimberley, Texas at 6:00 P.M. This date needs to be confirmed.
A Recommitment ceremony will be held for members.
Scholarship money will be donated at this time.
Tonda Frady will be in charge of music for this meeting.
o Incoming Nu President Morales reported that the Tri Chapter meeting has been confirmed for
January 17, 2015, at the First Christian Church in San Marcos, Texas.
Incoming Nu President Morales has invited Alpha State President Nancy Newton to be
Nu Chapters Special Guest.
Incoming Nu President Morales stated the ELFS acting group from S.T.A.G.E. in Bulverde,
Texas will be the program.
Incoming Nu President Morales suggested inviting the Luling Chapter to join with us to
make this meeting a Joint Chapter Meeting.
Tonda reported that she will check with Beth Watson, Our Lady of the Lunch, for
luncheon suggestions for between 40-50 guests with pricing between $9.00-10.00 per
plate.
Ham or chicken are preferred menu choices.
It was suggested that Nu members bring desserts.
Charlotte Evans will say the blessing.
Incoming Nu President Morales will form committees for door prizes, favors, and
decorations.
Incoming Nu President Morales will announce these committees at the first
meeting in September.
Winter decorations will be used.
Margie Harmon will confirm round table count at the Church.
Members will bring wrapped door prizes.
Jenny Turner and Nadyne Gartman will check on table cloths and tables and email
Incoming Nu President Morales their findings.
Carol Grimm suggested mixing up chapters so all wouldnt sit at the same table.
DKG symbols were suggested as table markers. Attendees would have a symbol
on their nametag to match with the table markers.
o Incoming Nu President Morales reported that the February 17, 2015, meeting will be at the
Chapel of the Hills, Wimberley, Texas.
The program will honor all members who have been Chapter Presidents.
The meal will feature healthy soups and salads.
Margie Harmon will give the blessing/ inspirational reading.
The music will feature love songs.
o Incoming Nu President Morales reported that the April 21, 2015, meeting will be at the First
Baptist Church, Kyle, Texas at 6 P.M. Nadyne Gartman will confirm this meeting date and
location.
The program will be Nu Chapters 85
th
Birthday celebration.
A suggestion to wear Easter hats, gloves, and handkerchiefs in honor of our Chapter
Founders.
Morales will check with Mary Thorne regarding location of Nu Chapters Original
Charter.
o Incoming Nu President Morales reported that the May 19, 2015, meeting location has not yet
been secured. Morales suggested Johnson City.
Nu Chapter will celebrate Founders Day.
A Luau theme was suggested with salads and fruits.
o Incoming Nu President Morales reported that September 15, 2015, meeting location has not
been confirmed. The Chapel in the Hills in Wimberley will be contacted to confirm that
location.
Budget
o Nu Treasurer Tonda Frady stated the proposed budget will be presented at the August 24,
2014, meeting and approved at the September 16, 2014, meeting.
o Frady reported that dues are $83.00 per year due by November 1, 2014.
o Frady stated that she can divide the $83.00 into three payments. She will have this breakdown
available at the August 24, 2014, meeting.
Committee Reports
o Membership
Morales stated that she is working with the membership committee to create a tri-fold
brochure for Nu Chapter to make available in the area schools.
Morales suggested sending a letter of Congratulations to the Teachers of the
Month/Year with information about Nu Chapter.
Connie Bagley who has been named HEB Teacher of the Year needs to receive a letter
from Nu Chapter and an invitation to attend our meetings.
Barbara Davis, a TSU Professor has indicated interest in Nu Chapter.
Maggie Baines has moved and will have new email address.
Joy Philpott has been dropped from Nu membership roster.
Morales will check with Evelyn Barrett concerning Wanda Frix.
o Nominations Committee
Dr. Barbara Pevoto, Tonda Frady, Cheryl Blake, and Dr. Evelyn Barrett (alternate) are
members of the Nominations Committee for the next Biennium.
o Yearbook
Laurie Kirkscey and Loretta Eiben will work on the Yearbook.
Morales reported working diligently updating the Nu Roster.
Tonda Frady, Carol Eason Fowler, Ernestine Kincaid and Reserve Members Sally
Baker, Bea Ellison, and Kay Hoffer will have newsletters mailed to them.
Yearbooks will be handed out to all members at meetings. Yearbooks will be sent
via mail to Reserve Members.
o Scholarship
Cheryl Blake presented written suggestions (attached) for how Nu Chapter awards the
Nu Scholarships each year.
Cheryl Blake, Pat Tingle, and Charlotte Evans will create an application for this Nu
Scholarship.
Committee recommends Nu Chapter open application to all female candidates entering
their student teaching phase within Hays County.
The Committee recommends Nu Chapter have a point system to evaluate applications.
Carol Grimm will have a booth of her crocheted necklaces at the Area Workshop to raise
money for The Nu Scholarship Fund.
Nadyne Gartman suggested having a Scholarship Dessert Raffle at each meeting.
Nu members will volunteer to make a dessert for each meeting. Members will
put $1.00 in the Scholarship Jar at each meeting. A members name will be
drawn at the conclusion of the meeting for the special dessert.
Nadyne volunteered to bring the dessert for the September Scholarship Raffle.
Projects
o School Supplies will be collected in September.
o Nu Chapter will collect needed items for the Hays Caldwell Womens Center in February.
Adjournment
o Morales adjourned the executive board meeting at 4:30 P.M.
