Attitude and Behavior of the Japanese on Aid for Developing Countries:

Discussion from JGSS-2006 data
Kunio MINATO
School of Foreign Studies
Osaka University
This article is an attempt to elucidate how the Japanese see and act on aid for developing
countries. While "Opinion Poll on Foreign Diplomacy" by Cabinet Administration Office of
Japan has asked public opinion on economic cooperation, the JGSS data allows micro-level
analysis, and thus enables us to understand values, attitude and behavior of the Japanese toward
aid for developing countries more precisely.
JGSS-2006 incorporates several questions on aid for developing countries, that is, questions
asking values toward aid, experience to give donation or goods to developing countries, and
experience of job or volunteer work related to assistance for developing countries. Besides, the
JGSS has incorporated a question that asks attitude toward government expenditure on foreign aid
in general since its previous surveys. Analyzing responses on these questions will be a help to
gain popular consent on aid for developing countries.
