Writing Lesson Plan

Strategy/Skill Focus: Creative Writing_________________

Learning Objective: Fifth grade students will write a letter(s) to a sixth grade
student expressing any questions or sharing concerns he or she may have about
middle school. Students will learn the basics of letter etiquette as they
communicate via snail mail with another student. Students should be curious and
creative when writing to the older students, hopefully receiving what they
need/want to hear.
Standards (KPS):
LA.05.5 Students will apply the Write Traits to the writing process to
compose descriptive writing pieces.
LA.05.6 Students will analyze sentences and apply correct grammar skills to
writing.
Materials and Text: Students will be provided with a choice of stationary, black or
blue ink, an envelope and stamp, and will use their own curiosity to complete the
assignment.
Instructional Strategies (research or evidence based):
Identifying Similarities and Differences Nonlinguistic Representations
Summarizing and Note Taking Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback
Reinforcing Effort and Providing Recognition Generating and Testing Hypotheses
Homework and Practice Cues, Questions, and Advanced Organizers

of middle school either in class or as homework.

They will have an activity based on finding errors in example letters and
correcting them. This will help them actually see what a poorly written letter
should look/sound like.
They will focus on being clear when using written communication and being
grammatically correct, as well as having correct spelling.
Assessment of Learning Objective: Fifth grade students are satisfied with their
feedback from the middle school students. The fifth graders have an understanding
of how to properly write a letter. They are assessed on their letter writing before
the letters are sent; this ensures proper grammar and spelling are being used and
that their handwriting is legible. Students are also eager to advance to a new school
and continue to grow in the classroom as an individual.
