Sundial Splash Community Float Bring your canoe, kayak, paddle board anything that oats and can be paddled to join the Sundial Splash Community Float starting at 10 a.m. Saturday near the Sundial Bridge. The event, sponsored by the city, Shasta Trinity Fly Fishers and the Rotary Club, will send as many as 300 people down the river in a fun oat and race. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The race begins at 10 a.m. Paddlers will put in under the Sundial Bridge and end at the Reginato River access, South Bonnyview Road. Participants will be bused back to Turtle Bay aboard RABA buses. There will be seven categories to the race. First-place nishers will receive tickets to the Sundial Celebration on the Civic Lawn concert at the Redding Civic Audito- rium that same night. The awards will be handed out at 8 p.m. during the concert. Cost to participate is $15 for adults and $7 for children. Children must be at least 5 years old and be accompanied by an adult. Dancing with the Stars Shasta County Style Six local stars will compete for votes from the community earned through fundraising in this event beneting One SAFE Place, former- ly the Shasta Womens Refuge, and the Shasta Family Justice Center. The annual show will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Cascade Theatre, 1731 Market St., Redding. The champion is based on how much money the dancing star raised. Audience members can add to the tally by dropping in their donations during the performance. Each team goes through a rigor- ous practice schedule to earn the Judges Choice Champion trophy awarded to the team who earns the highest style and technical marks during the event. Sundial 10th anniversary events Sundial Celebration on the Civic Lawn Live music, catered food and reworks highlight this community celebration from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday on the Redding Civic Audito- rium lawn. Advance Redding, the or- ganization that operates the Civic Auditorium, put to- gether the event. No outside food or drinks are allowed, but spectators can get food from Applebees, Marie Cal- lenders and Cicada Cantina, who will be selling food on site. The concert features Sara Oliveira, Cattle Rocket and DJ Jake Easy. Oliveira, a young singer and songwriter who recent- ly moved to Nashville from Redding, will open the night. Her music has been featured on RyanSeacrest.com. She will be followed by Jake Easy and dancing. Red- ding-based country rock band Cattle Rock- et will take the stage after the fireworks. Jake Easy returns just before midnight. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Those 21 and older will be wristbanded. Street Legal Drag Racing The Redding Dragstrip will host races from 5-11 p.m. Saturday at the strip behind Redding Municipal Airport. Saturday will feature Battle of the Imports. Entry is just $5 per person; kids 6 and under get in free. If you want to race (open to anyone with a valid drivers license and car insurance), tech cards are $10. High school students with a valid high school ID and drivers license can race for free. Gates open at 5 p.m., racing starts at 6 p.m. Battle of the Bands, Travelling Ills concert The Battle of the Bands continues this weekend at Bridge Bay Resort. This week Travelling Ills performs at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the resort, 10300 Bridge Bay Road, Redding. Each weekend through Labor Day, diferent Northern California and Oregon bands compete for a prize of $5,000. Chef at the Market This Saturday Chef Wes Matthews with Market Street Steakhouse will demonstrate recipes and cooking tech- niques in the Chef at the Market feature at the Redding Farmers Market. Chef at the Market is a free community event/cooking dem- onstration featuring local chefs from Reddings restaurants or businesses in the culinary arts area to promote eating local, seasonal fruits and vegetables ofered at the farmers market. The demonstration will be from 9:30-11 a.m. Saturday at the Farmers Market at Redding City Hall, 777 Cypress Ave. Wintu Audubon Campout at Lassen Volcanic National Park The Wintu Audubon Club will take in birding and camping at the Lost Creek Group Campground in an overnight trip Friday and Saturday nights. Group Camp Site No. 5 has been reserved for both nights. The club will be joined by the Redwood Region Audubon Society and Altacal Audubon Society. Folks can either camp at Lost Creek or drive up for either or both Saturday and Sunday. Campers can arrive at the campsite at a time of their choos- ing Friday afternoon. Saturday day trippers should meet at the Redding Civic Auditorium (Convention Center) at 8 a.m. Saturday to car pool. The clubs will bird watch at Man- zanita Lake on Saturday morning. The rest of the itinerary is open and will depend on the interests of the participants. Day trippers for Sunday will meet at the camp site at 9 a.m. Lost Creek has primitive facilities pit toilets and no electricity, but potable water is available. Brews by the Bridge Catalyst Redding Young Professionals, Indie Element and Redding Beer Week will hold Brews by the Bridge from 6-10 p.m. Friday in the Quarry Patio at Turtle Bay, 840 Sundial Bridge Drive, Redding (across the Sundial Bridge from the Civic Auditorium). Identification is required for wristbands and to buy drink tickets but the event is open to all ages, in hopes of encouraging young families to attend. Eleven breweries from California and Oregon will provide samples of their brews. Non- alcoholic beverages also will be served. Restaurants serving food at the event are Cinders Wood Fired Pizza and C.R. Gibbs American Grille. The event is free to the public. Single beers are $5 each and a sampling of six brews is $10. California Native Plant Society Wildower Fieldtrip to Upper Deadfall Lake The California Native Plant Society will lead a field trip to Upper Deadfall Lake to look at wildflowers Saturday. This 5- to 6-mile moderately strenuous field trip will start in a wet meadow area and climb 1,400 feet to Upper Deadfall Lake. Mt. Eddy has serpentine soils and a number of uncommon plant as- sociations and rare plants including Mt. Eddy sky pilot found only on Mt. Eddy. Participants should bring water, sunscreen and lunch. No dogs please. Participants should meet at Redding City Hall southwest parking lot on Parkview Avenue and carpool to the trailhead.
