Two beaders, two ways: Choosing a clasp
Design is in the details.

Versatility means
wearability. Kelsey Lawler

Dana Meredith
While some may be in the form
follows function camp, Im all about
the decorative options of a toggle
clasp. (Plus, I nd it easier to fasten
a toggle than manipulate the tiny
lever of a lobster clasp!) While I appreciate the security
a lobster clasp offers, I prefer to choose a closure that
enhances the design aesthetic of the piece, especially
when it will be worn by someone with short hair.

Ever have a necklace that should

be perfect with a particular outt,
but its either too long or too short?
I hate it when that happens! To nip
this fashion frustration in the bud,
I nish with a lobster claw clasp and chain extender.
Not only do lobster claws offer adjustability, letting
you share jewelry between ensembles and between
friends, but theyre also secure and dependable.

Inspiration corner
Ten years ago, Parkinsons disease forced DIANA CHERVINKO to give up the sewing and needlework
she loved: Fabric, patterns, and pins were too diffcult for her to handle. Then she discovered beading.
It started with a necklace she bought that wasnt working, so she took it apart and that one necklace
became dozens! Though pearls are her birthstone, she never really appreciated them. But these pearls
languishing in her supply box beckoned, and she was determined to fnish a project.
Though knotting is a huge challenge, once she started and added the rondelles, this
58-in. (1.47 m) beauty really took shape. I had already strung and restrung those pearls
several times. By adding the knotting, I felt like I was honoring the pearls. And the pearls
responded. She hadnt imagined that beading was something she could do. Its the
fnishing that is most diffcult. Handling the tools. Sometimes projects get set aside
until I am physically able to cope with whatevers needed.
Fortunately, Dianas humor and positive approach keep her smiling. Her
philosophy? As much creativity can go into coping with each health twist as goes
into creating a piece of jewelry. Contact Diana at charmedbaublesandbeads@
gmail.com or visit charmedbaublesnbeads.etsy.com.

When youre knotting pearls, its always a

challenge to hold the beads and the thread
plus position the knot at the same time.
Beadalons Knot-a-Bead tabletop tool
helps you tie precise knots. Simply make an
overhand knot around the tools retractable
awl and wrap the cord around the hook to
tighten the knot. Then push a button, and
the knot will slip off the awl next to the bead.
Suitable for braided cords, cotton, nylon, silk,
and many other materials, the Knot-a-Bead
can accommodate any shape beads up to
16 mm in diameter. For a video demo and

Peridot

better way to wear it than with
real gemstones? Peridot was
a natural choice, since green

Attach a charm and close
the jump ring. Cut a piece
of beading wire 2325 in.

charm on the wire.

Add some length to your necklace

without buying two strands of gems:
String affordable crystals in a matching
color on each end of the strand. The
crystals will sit at the back of your neck,
and admirers will be none the wiser!

On each side of the

pendant, string a spacer,
an accent crystal, a spacer,
and 12 in. (2.55 cm) of
peridot beads. Repeat three
or four times. End with a
spacer, an accent crystal,

On one end of the wire,

string: 12 in. (2.55 cm)
of green crystals, crimp

Diamond
dangles
I like embellishing wirework with beads, so I gathered
pearls and a bright briolette around a wire frame.
I was inspired by grapes! Madelin Adriani Pratama

earrings For each earring: Cut

two 5-in. (13 cm) pieces of
20-gauge craft wire. Leaving a 1 2 -in.
(1.3 cm) tail, place one end of each
wire in a ring clamp.

To make a diamond-shaped frame,

use chainnose pliers to bend the
wire at the marks from step 3 as
shown.

Mark the twisted wire section at

1, 2, and 3 in. (2.5, 5, and 7.6 cm).

To make the frames loops: Trim

one tail wire from each side.
With each remaining tail wire, use
roundnose pliers to make a loop
perpendicular to the frame.

22

BEAD STYLE

| SEPTEMBER 2014

Use chainnose pliers to firmly hold

the other ends of the wires 1 2 in.
(1.3 cm) from the end. To twist the
wire, hold the chainnose pliers, and
turn the ring clamp 20 to 30 times to
make a 4-in. (10 cm) twisted section.

Cut an 8-in. (20 cm) piece of

20-gauge craft wire. Leaving a
1-in. (2.5 cm) tail on one end, cross
the ends of the wire to form a loop.
Place the loop over the frames loops
with the 1-in. tail on top.

WorldMags.net

On a bench block, hammer both

sides of the frame, taking care
not to over-hammer the bends from
step 4.

Wrap the 1-in. (2.5 cm) wire two or

three times up around the base of
the frames loops. Wrap the long wire
down around the top of the frame until
youve wrapped about a 1 4-in. (6 mm)
section. Trim and tuck the excess wire.

WorldMags.net

Cluster tip

To make a dangle: Cut a 9-in.

(23 cm) piece of 22- or 24-gauge
wire. String a briolette and make a set
of wraps above it (see Basics, p. 72).
Make the first half of a wrapped
loop (Basics).

10

11

12

To make a bead cluster: Cut

a 12-in. (30 cm) piece of
26- or 28-gauge wire. On one side of
the frame, about 1 2 in. (1.3 cm) from
the bottom point, wrap one end of
the wire two or three times around
the frame. Trim and tuck the excess
tail wire.

Attach the dangle to the bottom

of the frame and complete the
wraps. Extend the wraps over the top
of the briolette as desired.

Working toward the bottom

point, string a few 34 mm
(small) pearls and spacers. Wrap the
wire once or twice around the frame.
Working up the opposite side of the
frame, string an equal number of
pearls and spacers. Wrap the wire
once or twice around the frame.

What youll need

14

String one or two small pearls

and spacers, a 6 mm pearl, and
one or two small pearls and spacers
(Cluster tip, above). Wrap the wire two
or three times around the opposite
side of the frame. Trim and tuck the
excess wire.

Depending how far up the frame

your bead cluster goes, you might
need more or fewer small pearls
and spacers in step 14. Just
make sure the beads span
the width of the frame
without any gaps.

13

Working from side to side,

repeat step 12 two or three
times to attach additional small pearls
and spacers, filling in the frame. End
by wrapping the wire once or twice
around the frame near the top of the
cluster. Do not trim and excess wire.

Cluster pearls

by Cynthia Ebner

Trend to try

Party

PEARLS

I had a shirt that needed a necklace, and a single strand of pearls looked too plain.
So I started wiring the pearls to chain just the look my top needed! Since then,
Ive made custom pearl necklaces in a variety of color combinations. The necklaces
range from just a few pearls to very full clusters with 130 pearls. Varying the size
and number of pearls makes each necklace either big and bold or petite and refined.
The end result is always a lot of fun and goes with any outfit, from casual to elegant.

Cut a 1720-in. (4351 cm) piece of

chain with an odd number of links.
Open the loop of the 16 mm pearl unit
(Basics). Attach the 16 mm unit to the
center link of chain. Close the loop.

On each side, about 1 in. (2.5 cm)

from the 16 mm unit, attach a
14 mm unit. Continue attaching pearl
units at 1-in. (2.5 cm) intervals, in
descending sizes, until youve
attached a 12 mm, 10 mm, 8 mm,
and 6 mm on each side of the 16 mm.
This is the beaded section.

Check the fit, and add or remove

chain links from each end if
necessary. On one end link of chain,
attach a 6 mm pearl unit.

Starting at the center of the

necklace, in between the two
14 mm units, attach three to five pearl
units of different sizes to each link of
chain until the cluster is the desired
fullness. (Note: The center cluster
shown here has 38 pearl units, but you
can add more or fewer as desired.)

Staying within the beaded section,

work outward from the center and
continue attaching units of different
sizes to the chain. Taper the sizes of
units as you go, attaching more 8 mm

interconnecting strands |

Rosecolored
romance
Weave a pretty pearl necklace
by Clare Pearson

I like to play with forms and colors until something hits me, rather than be terribly
conceptual. But for this necklace, I was inspired to create an intricate interplay of
colors and shapes by the thorny tangles of wild dog roses growing in a park nearby.
The woodsy quality of the rhodochrosite sticks plays well with the delicate Biwa stick
pearls and potato pearls a nice balance of elemental nature and soft femininity.

(6.410 cm) pieces of chain. Open
a 4 mm jump ring (see Basics, p. 72)

and a 6 mm soldered jump ring.
Close the jump ring.

Cut a 17-in. (43 cm) piece of

beading wire. String one or two
spacers, a crimp bead, and a Wire
Guardian. String the soldered jump
ring from step 1. Go back through
the beads just strung and tighten the
wire. Make a flattened crimp or folded
crimp (Basics). Trim the excess wire.

String a bead over two of the wires

to connect the strands. On each
wire, string several more beads.

On each wire, string about 1 in.

(2.5 cm) of beads as desired.

Continue stringing beads as

desired until the beaded section
is 91 2 in. (24.1 cm), connecting the
wires at 12-in. (2.55 cm) intervals.
Connect alternating wires so all
three strands crisscross.

10

On each end of the necklace,

use a jump ring to attach an
end link of chain and half of a clasp.

On each wire, string one or two

spacers, a crimp bead, and a Wire
Guardian. Over all three wires, string
a soldered jump ring. Go back through
the beads just strung and tighten the
wire. Crimp each crimp bead and trim
the excess wire. Close a crimp cover
over each crimp.

Repeat step 2 with two more

wires. Close a crimp cover over
each crimp.

On one of the wires from step

5 and the remaining wire, string a
bead to connect the strands.

Use a 4 mm jump ring to attach

the soldered ring and an end link
of the remaining chain. Check the fit
and trim chain if necessary.

Costume

Pearls and crystals capture vintage glam
by Monica Lueder
Whenever I browse local antique shops, my first
stop is always the jewelry. Theres typically
fine jewelry locked in a glass display,
but I go for the wildly vibrant costume jewelry
thats heaped on top of the counter. While fine jewelry is
meant to be an investment, costume jewelry is simply for
fun and fashionable accessorizing. I decided to make my
own vintage-inspired piece by mixing pearls and crystals
in warm peach and champagne tones. This necklace has
a sort of old-school glamour thats sure to get noticed!

Ideally, your packaging

with just a little extra time

First and foremost: Always

inside a hard-sided box with
cotton inserts, recycled
crinkled paper, or padding to
keep the jewelry from moving

larger box or bubble mailer to
prevent further damage. You
can always dress up the outer
packaging with inexpensive
rubber stamps or stickers.

Your packaging should

reflect your style or brand
just as much as your jewelry
does. Jewelry designer
Kristina Henning of Kande

jewelry that mixes both
vintage and modern
elements. My packaging
reflects my brand its
handmade in that I create
the images for the packaging

paired with contemporary
design. Its a reflection of
things that I personally love
just like my jewelry.
Kristina includes her

believes this is the most
important part of putting

Packaging jewelry in tissue paper and a bubble mailer

is not secure enough. Many times, mailers are put
through a machine in the shipping process that can
crush their contents. Buy jewelry boxes in bulk to keep

(4661 cm) pieces of beading
wire. On one wire, center an 80 mm
curved tube bead. On each end of
the wire, string a gemstone bead,
a pearl, and an 80 mm tube (see
Smart stringing, below).

Follow step 3b to attach the

remaining strands to the wrapped
loop. Repeat steps 3 and 4 on the
other side of the necklace. Check
the fit, allowing 23 in. (57.6 cm) for
the finishing (see Vary the length,
below left). Add or remove beads if
necessary. Crimp each crimp bead
(Basics) and trim the excess wire.

On the second wire, string a

67 mm pearl, an 89 mm pearl,
and a 50 mm curved tube bead.
Repeat the pattern three times, then
string two pearls. On the remaining
wires, string beads and tubes as
desired.

On one 22-gauge wire, string a

cone and an accent bead. Make
a wrapped loop. Repeat on the other
side of the necklace. Open a 45 mm
jump ring (Basics). On one end of the
necklace, use the jump ring to attach
the wrapped loop and a lobster claw
clasp. Close the jump ring.

Smart stringing

Stagger colors, sizes, and textures of round beads. String one, two, or three beads
depending on where the strands fall. No need to string the same pattern within a
strand; just check the drape often to see how the strands complement each other.

On the other end, use a 45 mm

jump ring to attach the wrapped
loop and a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of
chain. On a head pin, string a pearl.
Make the first half of a wrapped loop.
Attach the end link of chain and
complete the wraps.

Vary the length

For a longer necklace, you can attach
a longer chain extender, or use a larger
cone and clasp.
You can also string more beads per
strand. Try not to end all the strands
with round beads, though, as they add
bulk at the back of the neck.
For a much longer necklace, string an
extra 50 mm tube on each end.

Blended blues
Consult your stash for a sweet strand
by Jennifer Robinson
To create a necklace that blends from one color to the next, blues and greens are a natural
choice. There are so many beautiful shades in between pale aqua, teal, turquoise. I set
out all the loose pearls and gemstones I had in these cool hues and arranged them from light
to dark, from blue to green. I then used wrapped loops to create a continuous beaded chain.
As your eye travels around the necklace, theres something new at every turn!

Wrap savvy

Petite pearl
accents

by Kim Bloomberg

Classic beads lend lasting appeal to modern jewelry designs

Kim Bloomberg aims for each piece she designs to fit her
philosophy: Jewelry should be elegant yet comfortable.
The artful balance of modern and antique yields timeless
treasure. Pearls play a large part in Kims design approach.
Whether incorporating them as a focal or an accent, she
draws on their refined feel to breathe a charming, heirloom
quality into her work. Kelsey Lawler
About me

Tips for working with pearls

Im originally from New York but relocated to the Chicago

area four years ago with my husband and our two children.
I teach crafts and jewelry making in libraries and schools
all over Chicagos North Shore. Originally my grandmothers
love of jewelry motivated me to begin designing, but today
I have a lot of people who continue to inspire me.

Quality makes all the difference, so use the best pearls

you can find. Even if theyre not the focal, try incorporating
pearls as an accent; white pearls especially brighten up
a design and catch the light. Beyond white, have fun and
experiment with different colors of pearls I love
champagne and pink.

My jewelry-making start

Fine finished jewelry

I started glassblowing when I was 16 years old, continued

through college, and went into glass bead making. I ended
up with thousands of glass beads but didnt know how to
make jewelry, so I taught myself. Glassblowing showed me
that sometimes pieces dont work out colors might not
harmonize, glass breaks, and sometimes you have to start
over to get it right. Its important to enjoy the process.

When designing, I never have a plan. I just try to combine

colors, stones, and sizes so they work together in harmony.
My style has evolved over the years, but Ive always loved
working with intricate components and fine chains. The end
result of my work is dainty and delicate; its probably not
evident at first glance just how much work goes into the
construction. I wanted to create a collection that I would
want to wear and would feel proud to see others wearing.
Pearls come into play because theyre classic and have an
heirloom quality. Thats what I aim for in all of my jewelry.

The appeal of pearls

I have always been drawn to pearls. Pearls provide a
wonderful frame to showcase colorful gemstones they
highlight, rather than distract from, the cut and color of
gems. Theyre also feminine, timeless, and one of the most
beautiful things found in nature. Pearls also show up well
on most people, especially in earrings. People with dark
hair often need a pop of something so that earrings show
up better, and pearls usually do the trick.

Advice for beginning jewelry makers

Aside from having good light and excellent tools, ask
questions. Seek out mentors who can help you grow.
Find your own voice and make your style unique.

WHAT YOULL LEARN

pearl knotting | using bead tips

Seasonal shades
For a subtle blending, I used crystal
pearls in four hues.

Tie the knot

Create a classic knotted pearl necklace
by Dana Meredith
WorldMags.net

WorldMags.net

If youre new to this technique, try a few knots with scrap cord and pearls first.
Check the fit of your necklace often towards the end its easy to add more
pearls, but very tricky to undo the knots once theyre made!

necklace Stretch the cord before

you begin: If possible, hang it with
a weight overnight. Otherwise, pull
sections of the cord firmly between
your hands along the entire length,
stretching it as much as possible.

Leaving a 3-in. (7.6 cm) tail, tie an

overhand knot (see Basics, p. 72).
Tie a second overhand knot on top
of the first knot. String a bead tip with
the hook facing the knot.

Tie an overhand knot with the

working cord, snugging it as
close to the bead tip as possible.

Use a large binder clip to secure

the cord tail to a work board.
(This is optional but extremely helpful
as it anchors one end of the cord.)
String a pearl.

Slowly remove the awl while

tightening the knot as close to the
pearl as possible. Use your thumbnail
to finish snugging the knot against
the pearl.

String three pearls in different

colors, tying an overhand knot
between each as in steps 6 and 7.
Snug each knot as close as possible
to the previous pearl.

Pull the knot into the cup of the

bead tip. Apply glue to the knot.
Use chainnose pliers to close the
cup of the bead tip. Do not trim the
excess cord.

Tie a loose overhand knot with

the working end of the cord. Insert
a beading awl under and through the
loop of the knot. Pushing with the awl,
slowly move the knot next to the pearl,
keeping the loop on top of the cord.

Continue stringing in the pattern

from step 8 until the strand is
within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of the finished
length. End with a knot.

Size it up
The size of the cording should be determined by the beads hole size. If the
cord is too small, the knot will disappear into the bead. Avoid using silk cord
with metal beads or crystals, as the beads sharp edges can cut the thread.

necklace Cut a 30-in. (76 cm)

piece (cord A) and two 21-in.
(53 cm) pieces (cords B and C) of
leather cord. On cord A, make the
loop end of the closure: Fold over
61 2 in. (16.5 cm). Pinch the fold.

On cord A, loosely coil the short

tail towards the fold three or four
times.

Test the loop size to make sure

its just large enough to fit around
a pearl.

Trim the excess cord above the

knot and the tail of cord A below
the knot. Apply glue to the cord ends
(see Super gluing, p. 68).

On each cord, string three to five

pearls. (You will position and glue
them in place later.)

10

12

String cords B and C into the set

of coils.

String cords B and C through

the coils. Adjust the length of
B and C as desired to form graduated
strands, then tighten the knot. Trim
the excess cord of one of the three
tails. Apply glue to the knot to secure
the strands. Allow to dry.

On one of the tails, string a

pearl and tie an overhand knot
(see Basics, p. 72) about 1 in. (2.5 cm)
from the coils. String a pearl on the
remaining tail and tie a knot at a
slightly longer length to make a
necklace extender. Trim the excess
cord and apply glue to each knot.
Allow to dry.

String the tail back through the

set of coils. Do not tighten the
knot yet.

With one hand, pull the fold, and

with the other pull cord A below
the knot to tighten it.

Fold over cord A so the strand is

1516 in. (3841 cm) long. Loosely
coil the tail toward the center of the
necklace three or four times, then
feed the tail back through the coils
and the fold.

Lay your necklace on a piece

of waxed paper. Position the
pearls at least 1 in. (2.5 cm) apart,
staggering their placement so they
dont touch pearls on the other
strands. Move each pearl aside, apply
glue to the cord, and move the pearl
back in place over the glue. Apply glue
next to each pearl for extra security.

Super gluing
Apply glue sparingly, just a drop or
two at a time. When gluing coils or
securing strands, allow 2 to 3 minutes
for them to dry. When gluing pearls
in place on the necklace, allow 1 to 2
minutes before gluing the next pearl,
and allow 2 to 3 minutes before
starting the next strand. Dont rush
the gluing or drying process, or youll
risk the strands sticking together.

autumn elegance
When I made this necklace for
my October wedding, I tried not to be
too literally autumnal. Since everything
else at the wedding revolved around earth
tones, I didnt want a pumpkin-and-leaves
palette to be part of my jewelry. This piece
invokes elegance juxtaposed with the texture
and variety one would see in nature. The
mixed-metal focal adds a warm, rustic
feel against the creamy pearls.
