Welcome to Ms. Lewiss Life Science Class!

Course Focus:
In 7
th
grade science, we explore the world around us and enhance our skills learned last year to think and communicate
as scientists. We focus on using our senses to observe and record the interactions in a constantly changing environment.
We learn how to use scientific measuring devices and explore the biology, functions of living things, including humans
and diversity of the organisms in California and beyond. We will become more familiar with how we impact the world and
what role we play in it. We will have many opportunities to interact and experience science hands-on!

TOPICS we will cover include:
1) Scientific Inquiry
2) Cells and Body Systems
3) Genetics (our DNA) and Reproduction
4) Ecology
5) Evolution

Goals:
By the end of the year YOU will be able to
Think and communicate as a scientist.

Learn to use scientific tools used in the LIFE SCIENCE!

Work with your fellow classmates to improve your education and knowledge (and
theirs) in science.

Know how to use resources to find the things that you love to do.

Know the Biology of and observe and talk about the on-goings of California (the
biology of California is incredible!)

Learn about careers and organizations you can get involved in and places you can visit in your area that relate to
what we are studying.

Complete and practice the best ways for you to learn (projects, labs, tests, quizzes, using technology, drawing,
writing, reading, watching science unfold in front of your eyes!!)





Expectations
Participate!
Work hard and have an open mind to learn a lot this year.
Respect yourself and your classmates. Contribute to your learning and others; do not take
away from it.
Be honest and willing to ask for help.
Do your work to the best of YOUR ability.
Find out what work you missed, if you are absent or are pulled out of class. Come ask me or another
student!
Have fun and enjoy class!

Standard Procedures:
1) Be in your seat with all of your materials out by the
start of the period.

2) Complete the First 5 (Supplies, Do Now and
Objectives).

3) Turn in last nights homework in the homework
basket at the start of class.

4) Reflect on YOUR learning and what YOU want to
improve!

5) Leave PENS and MARKERS at home. They are not
allowed on CAMPUS. Dont worry, I will prove plenty
of coloring materials!
Grading and Homework:
Your grade in Science is comprised of California Standards-Based assessments:
o Final, or summative, assessments (e.g. tests, projects, labs, presentations).
o Interim/Informal, or formative assessments (including class activities, quizzes, study sessions, exit
tickets)
The purpose of homework is:
o To enable you to practice the skills that you learn in class.
o Practice the skills in which you are not yet proficient or advanced.
You must complete all assignments in this class, including every homework assignment, and actively learn the
content standards, in order to earn a proficient (3) or advanced (4) grade.
