Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

From the past centuries, we can see the fast movement of industrialization from zero to
everything. Carts and carriages from the past became cars and vehicles. Huts and tents slowly
evolved to manors, subdivisions to condominiums. Moreover, a persons life was drastically
changed from difficulty to easiness. Lifes helpers consisted of everything governed by the
principles of many sciences, from computers, appliances and even the electricity we use today.
The world is very fast and adaptive to change. Because of many developments discovered and
contributed by scientists to science-the systematic body of all knowledge-the world was moved
to the prevailing Age of Technology.

But life, still remains tough and hard to sustain. Lifes necessities, especially food, clothing
and health, are all dependable to anything we have, especially money. Todays living would be
very hard to achieve without depending on the science of economics. Technology is never
accessible to anyone who do not have anything. We experience economic downfalls and crises.
And the worst of all, because of mans continuous needs, our Earth is beginning to lose its
resources.

Though many are trying to solve the problem of the depletion of sources, our combined
efforts are still futile. Earth, as we know, is going through a continuous process of change and
restoration. But because we had consumed most of our natures bounty before the completion of
the process, we experience a shortage of resource.

Nobody wants to stop the world who had depended itself on technology. Though we can go
back to living a simple life, we do not want to leave the easy life we have made through constant
development of the society. Nobody will like the difficulty we would experience without
technology. Nobody would want to go back and live in open-air huts and get water form artesian
wells or rivers. Nobody would want to cook with firewood. Nobody will like to abolish lifes
essentials today, especially electricity and technology, for life would be a great challenge.

Electricity is important for our world to function. Without electricity, homes will never be
lighted, and gadgets will never work. Communities and subdivisions will be dark, and increased
criminal cases and violence may occur. Factories and companies can never do their job and run
their computers and machinery without the use of technology and electricity. A country without
electricity will be isolated from the world.

Since the invention of the principle of electricity, many scientists, including Benjamin
Franklin (1706-1790), James Watt (1736-1819), Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), Alessandro
Volta (1745-1827), George Simon Ohm (1789-1854), and many others, made significant
contributions to its development. They produced experiments and laws that are governing the
principle of power, magnetism, and light in electricity. Because of the important principles they
discovered, the electricity we have today is of great help to the world.

Even if electricity has great promises, one thing that is sure is that we need to have a source
on where we can find it. And, with the constant search and development of this field, scientists
discovered that many naturally occurring things here on Earth can generate electricity. They
discovered that geothermal energy, hydroelectric energy, nuclear energy and fossil fuels can be a
great source of electricity.

But, all of these sources are limited. The country today, with its present condition, is using
imported energy or fossil fuels from other countries to supply our homes the needed electricity to
run appliances. Geothermal energy in Albay, Laguna and Leyte, and the hydroelectric plants in
Lanao Del Norte cannot sustain the needed electricity of the country. Even if we import fuel
from other countries to produce electricity, many places of the country will be still far from our
reach to be given electricity and lighting in their homes.

We still have to search for a source that will make electricity boundless, something that will
be adequate enough to supply a whole community or country. And because of the invention of
the windmill for the production of electricity by Professor James Blyth (1839-1906), wind
energy became the first unlimited source for the production of electricity.

This investigatory project deals with the said unlimited source, which is wind energy. This
will try to explain the science behind the mechanism of producing lifes essential element today,
electricity, with the use of windmills and turbines. Moreover, this project will try to convince a
larger scale of people to favor wind energy in our country, which is also plagued by the problem
of efficient source of electricity. It will try to explain the usefulness and efficiency of wind
power in lighting our homes, communities and the country with the use of the laws of physics,
and will elaborate that electricity from wind energy is not costly, and most of all, environment-
friendly.

Statement of the Problem

This investigation is concerned with the efficiency of wind power as a source of electricity.
The study is done to state the importance of finding a stable power source for the country and to
convince the public to prefer wind energy than spending for imported fuel that will not be a long-
term solution for the energy crisis experienced by our motherland.

Specifically, this study was conducted to answer the following questions:
1. What is wind power and where did it started?

2. How does wind power work?

3. How efficient is wind power in producing electricity?

4. Why is wind power considerable as a stable source of electricity?

5. Will wind energy help ease the energy crisis that the country experiences?

Hypotheses of the Study

We, the authors, hypothesized in the investigation that:

1. Wind power comes from the blowing wind which turns windmills that convert the mechanical
energy of the wind to electric energy. It was probably started to be used in the western world and
in Europe for the past centuries.

2. Wind power works through a windmill and a turbine, which converts the mechanical energy of
the wind to electrical energy.

3. Wind power is most likely to be efficient in empowering towns and cities with electricity,
especially if the city is always windy.

4. Wind power is considered as a stable source of energy because it is renewable and
environment-friendly.

5. Somehow, wind energy, if implemented by the government to the whole country, will provide
a cleaner, more efficient and less costly source of electricity, which may likely help in resolving
the countrys energy crisis.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study:

This investigation is conducted by four (4) students of Blessed Maria Cristina Brando School,
namely: Richard Kenneth U. Bandiola, Kent A. Custodio, Joshua Jerald C. Tinsay and Christine
Kim A. Acena, fourth-year students of the said institution.

This investigation comprises the laws and principles of physics in the branch of electricity
and magnetism, and their relationship with one another. It also contains information about the
history, development and implementation of wind energy in many parts of the world. Lastly, it
encompasses the method of implementation of the government of the Philippines for a stable and
efficient source of electricity.

Significance of the Study

This investigation is created to help and clarify others about wind energy. This may be also
useful to:

The Filipino People. This study will help them know about wind energy and its uses. With this
study, people will be clarified about the true importance of wind energy, and the importance of
providing the country a stable and reliable source of electricity. If the government realizes the
importance of this source of electricity, citizens of the country will live more happily and
contented because of the less expenditures they will get in electric consumption.

Researchers. This study can also be of great help to those who needed to research about the
importance of wind energy. It can be used as a future reference for their study and widening of
the understanding of a certain topic of the same nature. Moreover, it will help them ease their
studies and save time from researching more information about the topic.

The Department of Energy. The study we conducted may also be adopted by the government to
further modernize the implementation, distribution, and modernization of the system of energy in
the country. This study may also add ideas to the information that may have been acquired by the
said department about the importance and efficiency of wind power. Lastly, this may also help
the government to have information in providing a more effective plan about the countrys
present electrical system.

Students. This may also be a great help to their experiment and their studying. This can provide
them the information they need about the laws of physics concerning electricity, magnetism,
turbines, windmills, wind energy and other topics included in this study. Furthermore, it can also
be a reference in doing experiments about the topics, and add more information about their work.
