HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE

INTRODUCTION
It is a mixture of Portland cement, water, aggregates and in some cases, admixtures.
The cement and water form a paste that hardens and bonds the aggregates together.
Concrete is often looked upon a man made rock.
HISTORY OF CONCRETE
Concrete is a material used in building constructions of a hard aggregate bonded together by
cement and water.
In 1756, British engineer , John Smeaton made the first modern concrete by adding pebbles as a
course aggregates and mixing a powered brick into the cement.
In 1824, English inventor, Joseph Aspdin invented portland cement, which has remained the
dominant cement used in concrete productions.
Concrete has been used in construction for over 2000 years. Today, concrete is finding more
inventive uses in construction and works of art.
MATERIALS (Selection of basic ingredients)
Cement: It should be selected based on the exposure conditions of the structure. The cement
used shall be of any type as specified by the Bureau of Indian standards.
Aggregate: It should be selected based on the purpose of the structure and shall comply with
the requirements of IS 383.
Water: It should be clean and free from injurious amounts of oils, acids alkalis, salts, sugar,
organic materials. Portable water is consider for concrete.
Admixtures: It used shall comply IS 9103.
In all the cases due consideration should be given to the durability, workability, and compressive
strength of concrete so that the resulting concrete satisfies the requirements of the structure.
