Principal Alan J. Tenreiro Assistant Principals Jessie A. Butash Adolfo L. Costa August 1, 2014 Dear CHS Families and Students, One of the reasons for Cumberland High Schools success in recent years has been our communitys annual initiative to embrace a school-wide concept and incorporate it into every day of the school year. Not only does this endeavor strengthen our community as a whole, but more importantly, the practice has proven to help students find purpose and meaning in their own high school experience. The results have been overwhelmingly positive, with increases in academic achievement, graduation rates, and the number of students gaining admission to some of the best colleges in the country. Last year, the CHS community focused on the power of one: What if we all asked the same question? What if we all answered it together? How could a question change our life at CHS? How could our answers affect the world beyond our campus? For our students, part of the process of growing up is what some people call "finding yourself," which simply means finding or discovering your "best self," the "you" that has something special to give the world. For both staff and students, it was a transformational experience. This year, the CHS community wants to pay it forward. Based on the philosophy from ancient Greece, rekindled by Benjamin Franklin, and in Lily Hardy Hammonds 1916 novel, In the Garden of Delight, the theory gained prominence in the book by Catherine Ryan Hyde and movie released in 2000 starring Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt. For 2014-15, every member of our CHS community will focus on the philosophy of paying it forward, of doing favors for others and expecting not something in return, but that the person who received the favor will in kind, turn and do favors for others. It is exciting to think of the difference we can make in the lives of those around us. This year, the classroom, the art room, the athletic field, the hallway, the Cumberland community as a whole, will be our laboratory for this experiment and experience. Will each of you really do it? Its your world. So, you decide. (Hyde, 2010, p. 303) I will. At CHS, one of our guiding beliefs - our expectation really - is that our students will be actively involved in the learning process that combines academic depth of understanding with higher order thinking, problem-solving, risk-taking, and creativity. Over the years, we have added a series of new courses including electives and expanded Advanced Placement courses, weve strengthened our graduation requirements, and developed authentic learning experiences (like Pay it Forward and last years Power of One) as part of our commitment to excellence and higher academic expectations at CHS. This year, weve redesigned our approach to the role of our guidance department, added and expanded our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) courses, implemented a Freshman Academy, expanded technology and continue to offer the breadth and depth of experience that only a comprehensive high school can provide. We at CHS are excited about the coming year and what we will accomplish together, on behalf of the entire faculty and staff, welcome to the 2014-15 school year. Sincerely,
Alan Tenreiro Principal Cumberland High School 2600 Mendon Road, Cumberland, Rhode Island 02864 TEL (401)658-2600 * FAX (401)658-0880
