Tutorial Problems: Review of Strength of Materials I
1. Draw a view of the element at A in Figure 1 with horizontal and vertical sides and show all stresses acting on it.
Figure 1
2. The minor principal stress at a point in the cross-section of a beam is 30 MPa (compressive), and the magnitude of maximum shearing stress is 100 MPa. Determine a) The major principal stress, if it is compressive, and the direct and shear stresses on the plane making an angle of 60 o in the clockwise direction with the plane of minor principal stress. b) The major principal stress, if it is tensile, and the direct stress on the planes of maximum shear stress.
3. Figure 2 shows a simply supported beam AE, which carries a varying load the intensity of which at any point distance x from B till point D is defined by the expression q =q 0 sin(x/), where q 0 is the maximum intensity at the centre C of the loading. Calculate the moment distribution, shear force distribution and maximum bending moment and maximum shear force in the beam.

4. Determine the loading, shear, moment, slope, and deflection functions for the beam in Figure 3, where the region a <x < is subjected to uniformly distributed load q 0 . Find the location and value of the maximum deflection.
