MEMORY IN CIRCUITS
Postulated by Prof L. Chua in 1971
A general class of nth-order memory devices
y(t) = g (x, u, t) u(t)
= f (x, u, t)
x&
In general are of three types:
Memristive Systems
Memcapacitive Systems
Meminductive Systems

MEMRISTIVE SYSTEMS
DEFINITION:
An nth-order current controlled memristive system :
VM (t) = R(x, I, t) I(t)
= f (x, I, t)
x&
PROPERTIES:
These devices are passive
“No energy discharge property”
System shows a “pinched hysteretic loop”.
Behaves as a non-linear resistor in the limit of zero freq.

MEMCAPACITIVE SYSTEMS
DEFINITION:
An nth-order voltage-controlled Memcapacitive
system
q (t) = C (x, VC, t) VC(t)
= f (x, VC, t)
x&
PROPERTIES:
This device can store energy
The system is A pinched hysteresis loop of
a memcapacitive system
€Passive if U1 + U2 = 0,
€Dissipative if U1 + U2 > 0 and
€ Active if U1 + U2 < 0. 12/03/09 9
MEMCAPACITIVE SYSTEMS
Simulation of a circuit (shown in the inset of (a))
composed of a voltage-controlled memcapacitive
system

MEMINDUCTIVE SYSTEMS
DEFINITION:
nth-order current-controlled meminductive
system Φ (t) = L (x, I, t) I(t)
= f (x, I, t)
x&
PROPERTIES:
The device can store energy
The energy stored in the current-controlled
meminductive system

NEW ELEMENTS IN SCENE
MEMRISTOR
It’s a device which changes its resistance depending
upon how much electrical charge flow through them.

MEMCAPACITOR
Memcapacitor is contraction of “memory capacitor". Its
a capacitance with memory, in which the capacitor
remembers how much charge was stored in it.

MEMCAPACITOR
There is a significant difference between this new devices
and the memristor: unlike the latter, a memcapacitor can
store energy.
A memcapacitor could store data without dissipating any
energy at all

MEMINDUCTOR
In this device, the inductance depend on the state and
history of the system.
Its an inductor with memory; a structure whose
inductance increases up to a certain value when
current flows in one direction and decreases down to
another value if the current flow direction is reversed
