Discussion questions

3 What does the data in Table 1.3 suggest with respect to the idea of tourism being a means for rich
countries to redistribute wealth to poorer countries?
4 Why might the figures for the USA be rather misleading in both Tables 1.2 and 1.3?

Both Tables 1.2 and 1.3 take no notice of the issue of how large a country is, and it is
therefore not surprising that the USA appears high in each ranking (although there are
other reasons for this as question 4 above implies). To see how significant tourism is in
a particular country, we need to adjust the data to allow for the size of the population
in each country. The world’s top tourism destinations relative to population are given
in Table 1.4.
