Healthcare Policy, Finance, and Regulatory Environments Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nurses (shortened to ESBN or AACN Essentials) states that essential number V (five) deals with the healthcare policies, including financial and regulatory policies, directly and indirectly influence nursing practice as well as nature and functioning of the healthcare system (AACN, 2014, p.20). The learning outcome in this portion is that the baccalaureate nurse and student should have a broader understanding of healthcare, healthcare issues and regulatory services. Also under the ESBN it is important to focus on the overall profession of nursing and improvement of wellbeing for our patients through these policy focuses. During the semester the student will learn through practice exams, discussion boards and essential writings. Exemplar During the semester we worked on projects that included the work of policy reform associated with the new information technology class. Our project included developing new technology devices that would help the nurse perform their jobs at a more efficient rate. In the process of developing these devices the use of finance and healthcare policy reform came into question and how this would be developed. Policy review and institution was all part of the essential V that was selected for this aspect of the portfolio and with this project the baccalaureate nurse will be able to perform these tasks at a proficient rate. Reflection The AACN essential five and the policy review project were similar in the way that the project helped with demonstrating basic knowledge of policy review, finance, and regulatory environments, including local, state, national, and global healthcare trends (AACN, 2014, p.21). As a baccalaureate nurse, the review of policy is an important and vital function as most of the companies in the healthcare system have policies which act as ground rules for the staff. It is important to identify oneself with the policies in order to build upon this knowledge at your local work environment. This project has enhanced my knowledge of the AACN essentials five and the importance of policy, finance, and regulatory environments.
